View Full Version : Disabling bios memory LordChaverly 16-04-2005, 16:15 how do you disable bios memory options such as caching or shadowing? My computer keeps crashing and this is one of the solutions suggeted 367squadron 16-04-2005, 16:27 i had same problem but disabling them didn't work for me, i had to check my drive for errors by using another Hard drive before mine worked. I think you can disable shadowing and caching when you press 'del' just as your computer is coming on. go on to the second tab press enter and i think thats where you can disable them. Hope this helps, but im sure someone will be able to give you more clear instructions. xafier 16-04-2005, 16:50 it depends entirely upon what motherboard you have, some of them don't even have access to such options if its something like a Packard Bell, or HP or Compaq... press del when the computer boots up, just look through the menu's... how is your computer crashing exactly? and where did you read that advice? to my knowledge those options are generally disabled by default on most motherboards. vidster 16-04-2005, 21:15 And what steps have you taken to remedy the crashing? When did it start crashing? Have you made any adjustments lately? Have you installed any new Hardware/Software? What (if any) error messages are you getting? What Operating System are you using? The more info you give us the better we will be able to help LordChaverly LordChaverly 17-04-2005, 09:51 Hi Vidster I did a reinstall of Windows XP yesterday and everything seemed to be fine until I use the web browser. It opens pages for three or four clicks and then the system crashes. I get a stop message asking if I have recently insatalled any dardware or software recently (no, apart from reinstalling Windows XP) and then it says another thing I could tru is disabling memeory options such as caching or shadowing. It then lists a long sequence of codes which I think point to the type of error. From what I have tried to discover it seems to be a problem caused by a driver trying to use protected memory space. I have the drivers for my Dell system, but am not sure which one to reinstall. I have run Norton Disk doctor and also Norton Win Doctor and neither have fixed the problem. I've also run Macafee, but again with no result. I wonder if I did another reinstall of Windows XP whetehr that would fix the problem? Any help will be gratefull received. LordChaverly 17-04-2005, 12:27 I have been searching for a possible solution for this and have one idea. I have been getting a message Bad_Pool_Caller with the blue screen. I think it may be caused by doing a Windows reinstall with a printer and the cable modem attached. One idea is to do a reinstall, with only the keboard and mouse attached. Its a pain having to reinstall XP again (it took me well over an hour yesterday, but can't think of any other solution at the moment. LordChaverly 17-04-2005, 17:32 I think I have solved the problem (touching wood). I reinstalled Windows XP, but before doing so i disconnected all peripherals excluding mouse keyboard and moniitor. I you get a message with bad_pool_caller, this is the thing to try. I found this solution on the Dell forum, as others had had the same problem. vidster 17-04-2005, 20:07 Sorry for not replying till now LordChaverly, i've been having a lazy day away from the computer  It seems you have fixed it yourself  If it does crash again (which i severely doubt it will), try typing sfc /scannow (note the space after sfc) in to the run box. This will scan your entire Operating System and replace any missing/damaged files. Glad you got it working ;) |
