View Full Version : Can a dog have an intolerance to chicken?
JarvisCocker 03-07-2008, 14:14 I gave Evie a very small amount of chicken last night about 7.30pm.
Just now she's been out and done a very runny poo, then came back and was sick. My hubby said it was lumps of undigested chicken.
I would have thought that the chicken I gave her last night would have been digested by now? She poo'd this morning and that was normal. Otherwise she seems OK in herself.
She's had chicken only about 4 times before and has been sick 3 times after having it now.
But I thought chicken was one of the easiest things for a dog to digest.
Some critters have intolerances to the strangest things- but it's pretty safe to assume if she's shown ill effects so far, that will be one to avoid for future
Yes- they can have issues with any sort of meat. Chicken is no easier to digest than other meat to be honest- it's used for food for animals which are recuperating after surgery etc. because it's quite bland, inexpensive and all that jazz.
I know of a couple of people who have found their animals sick on chicken. One of my cats is sick after virtually all meaty food and real meat or fish. His system is used to having biscuits and so that's what he gets. Any food that's not what they're used to can also make them sick if their system works that way.
I'm sure everyone knows about the absolute havoc that resulted from giving Molly one sardine (it was REALLY unpleasant!). I was recommended to give some to her to help with her coat, but her system said no and that was that- she's not having it again.
If Evie doesn't do well with chicken then I think that answers for itself really. It would be interesting to try that alongside other treats that she has though- do other exciting treats (e.g. other meats) produce the same result? If so then it may be that the excitement of the treat is too much for her stomach.
JarvisCocker 03-07-2008, 14:33 Would it be normal for her to have had it in her tummy for all that time and it be totally undigested?
She was once sick after wolfing down a dog chew. I think she ate it far too fast and didn't digest it.
JarvisCocker 03-07-2008, 14:37 Thanks Medusa. She did have ham once, but chicken too at the same time. Thats was one incident when she was sick. She's had chicken but mixed with veg and her normal biscuits and was OK with that.
Shes never had any other meat since I've had her as we don't eat red meat in our house.
No more chicken for Evie, and heres me thinking it would be a nice treat for her.:(
sierraman 03-07-2008, 14:41 Can't see why a dog should not have an intolerance to chicken? I too have an intolerance ... to dogs!

You won't be welcome round these parts then!

Then why waste your time looking at a thread that is about dogs?:loopy:

It was the chicken bit that drew me in!
JarvisCocker 03-07-2008, 15:49 Shall I not give her anything to eat tonight?
helenasq 03-07-2008, 15:51 How is her stomach now? Has she been sick/got the runs?
If not then it's up to you really as to
a) not give her anything till breakfast
b) give her a small, very bland meal of what you know she is ok to eat and just watch over her to see if her stomach has cleared even after eating that.
JarvisCocker 03-07-2008, 16:00 She was showing signs of wanting to go out about half an hour ago, and she did a runny poo, although not as runny as the one at lunchtime. She'll be going to the park after work about 6ish, so I think I'll see what she's like then.
I was thinking I might just give her half of what she normally has for her tea (James Wellbeloved Biscuits) and see how she goes with that.
I feel awful, that I've given her something and it's made her poorly :(

Poor girl- you'd got good intentions though! Just see how she goes really and keep an eye on her. GIve her a little food tonight and make sure that she has plenty of fresh water available for her if she wants it. If her stomach settles down, it should be ok to feed her as normal tomorrow- just follow your instincts to be honest. Good luck and I hope she feels better soon.
JarvisCocker 04-07-2008, 08:49 Thanks helenasq, quick update.... she was OK last night, no mad dash outside needed! I gave her a small amount of biscuits and she was OK with those. She's been out this morning and done a normal poo. So it seems she's got it out of her system.
No more chicken for Evie!

Glad to hear that she is ok again now! With you it sounds as if it most definatley is the chicken that is upsetting her, but sometimes just the heat on a really hot day can make them a bit off colour!
