Hello!

We just wanted to introduce ourselves. We are Aquavet, a canine hydrotherapy & rehabilitation centre in Sheffield. What makes Aquavet unique is the fact we are owned by a veterinary surgeon and managed by a qualified registered veterinary nurse.
We were aware that a number of people had submitted posts about canine hydrotherapy so we just wanted to let people know that we are based on Oak Street, just off London Road and we are easily accessible by car or public transport.
We have a state of the art 15ft x 8ft hydrotherapy pool with viewing windows and a Underwater Treadmill which allows us to provide the best possible care to your dog whether they require treatment for rehabilitation or just for fun and fitness.
For more information please contact us on 0114 2583221 or info@aquavet.co.uk. Our website address is www.aquavet.co.uk

Thanks for the info :)

we looked into hydrotherapy for our dog after spinal surgery, but there didn't seem to be anywhere near enough to justify rattling him around in a car and the potential damage that could have done him :(

Thats good to know. We looked into hydrotherapy for Eddie when he had his cruciate op but they were all quite far away.

We take our dog there as she has hip dysplasia, and i can't praise them enough, they are fantastic, 'Ellie' has come on leaps and bounds (literally lol)
Everyone is really friendly, and the facilities are great, and our very nervous pup now loves every minute she's there, and the service is a very reasonable price :thumbsup::thumbsup:

I hear there is also a service in Handsworth - which would be easier for us to get to if ever needed again

I wonder how viable it would be to use a DIY store swimming pool in the garden?

Depends on the dog, I think Strix. Upside to hydrotherapy pools is they maintain a constant temperature that is optimum for muscle building (cold water can actually cause muscle wastage) and they have the equipment to lower your dog in if his movement is too limited, not to mention harnesses to ensure he doesn't drown ;)

I was going to take Eddy to Aquavet but he's doing really well at the moment and really freaks if he's made to walk through a puddle

Not to mention I'm skint

Strix
17-07-2008, 17:06
oh I wouldn't attempt it with cold water (would have to install solar water heaters I think)
and also wouldn't attempt it with a dog bigger than my dinky little houndlet

CANINE SWIMATHON AND FUN DAY 2008

In aid of Support Dogs we are hosting a Canine Swimathon and Fun day Sunday 14th September 2008. The event will be held at Aquavet in association with Moscar Kennels and Cattery. The swimathon will splash off from 8am all the way through to 8pm with certificates and prizes for all dogs involved. The Fun Day will include a variety of stalls and games plus free veterinary checks.

We look forward to seeing you there!

What a brilliant idea - would you like us to put it on our website under SHEFFIELD DOGS?

How would they be sponsored on number of paddles? - explain to an ignorant one

Aquavet
01-08-2008, 07:53
That would be fantastic if you were able to put the event on your website, thank you very much!

The swimathon will run from 8am - 8pm with the fun day 10am - 4pm. The swimathon will be split into 15 minute sessions throughout the day e.g 8am, 8:15, 8:30 etc. Some dogs will swim for 15 minutes so will be sponsored for this time but others who are stronger swimmers will swim for a double block of 30 minutes so they will be sponsored for 30 minutes.

If you would like further information on Support Dogs their website is www.support-dogs.org.uk

Hi

This is just a quci post to say how great I think Aquavet hydrotherapy is.

We have a 9 month black lab called Harley, he was diagnosed with a slight heart murmer and I think he may have hip dysplacia ( am taking him to the vet next week). He seems to get tired really easily so we don't over-exercise him.

When we took him to Aquavet, he wasn't to sure at first, but the nurses were fantastic with him. He's been twice now and really enjoys it, especially the jacuzzi at the end!

I would advise people to go there with their dogs, the 1st session's free as well!

Yep i`ll second that shorty.

We`ve been going to Aquavet twice a week for the past 4-5 months.

Absolutely fab place and Leonie and Lisa the nurses are fantastic with the dogs.

Would definitely recommend them as well.

How does the hydrotherapy work for CDRM.

My friend's gsd has just been diagnosed - and the vet has recommended it to help him. He is such an energetic dog - he has to be out and busy and so its really hard for them to keep him at rest.

So, do you think they have recommended hydrotherapy to burn off some of his energy - or does it actually help improve some of the muscle tone elsewhere which may support him during his muscle weakening.

Also, whereabouts are you please again, and how much do the sessions cost? Is it dependant on the number of sessions needed - or size of dog. I think they have arranged to go to Thorne - but live at Worksop - so you may be closer.

Aquavet
11-05-2009, 08:43
Hello!

Hydrotherapy will certainly help a dog with CDRM but only as a maintenance programme to help maintain the muscle bulk around the hind limbs to aid the dog to lead as full and active life as possible. Unfortunately there is no cure for this condition.

We are based on the A57 Manchester Road next door to Moscar Kennels and Cattery.

The first session is free with each session thereafter £25. If they have pet insurance we would be only to claim back the costs of the hydrotherapy treatment for them because we are a veterinary based centre.

Just ask them to give us a call on 0114 230 45555.

I've been taking my collie spaniel cross Wilf to Aquavet every 2 weeks now since early June. They have now relocated to 13-17 Oak Street, Sheffield, South Yorkshire S8 9UB, 0114 258 3221, not sure we would have had time before but this is great, anyway he was suffering from cruciate ligament damage leading to arthritis and had been ok on liquid Glucosamine and Metacam until earlier this year, but at nearly 11 years old was starting to struggle and I was seriously worried about having to say goodbye before time simply because he couldn't walk. Our wonderful vet tried everything but Wilf had an intolerance to a lot of the newer drugs or they simply didn't help him. Anyway she suggested swimming at Aquavet, we tried it , and can't believe the difference. He was so unsure and struggled a bit the first time, but the staff there are so patient and encouraging, he's come on literally in leaps and bounds, he loves it and so do I watching him enjoy himself and improve so much. I can honestly say he's back to the mobility he had 4 years ago which is wonderful, and the main surprise is the speed of progress, I think I was looking for a wonderdrug when this is a much better solution, - believe me I was sceptical, but I'm delighted and to be honest truly amazed to see him so happy and if I'm honest a bit over confident in that he's stroppy with other dogs in the park now with his new found confidence!

Would recommend this certainly for similar conditions!
