(Repeat of earlier postings....)
P.J. Adams was head if I remember correctly - a magistrate or JP to boot....
A French teacher (Dave Jessop) and my personal favourite, "Chalky" White, English teacher.
Great bloke - had a thing about all his pupils being able to spell "immediately" correctly......Strange the things you remember!
Also (in my time anyway) a Mr.Sibley, who looked after the library....also liked hiking with a huge rucksack. Often saw him wandering along Pinstone Street, waiting for a bus to take him to Matlock or wherever.....
Also Jeff (Geoff?) Smith, maths teacher.....
and Mr.Walker, R.I. teacher.....
All retired/dead now, I guess...
I left in 67 or 68 - to help you zero in, I was in Ray Ashcroft's class - he went on to appear in The Bill, Corrie, etc.....
...and was it Mr.Wilson (art teacher) who was also known as "Peanut", by virtue of head shape and....er....lack of locks?
I bet the 'boys' will also remember a fellow pupil, Helen Caunt, a stunning looking lass even in her early teens. Went on to appear in Playboy (or Men Only) and eventually joined some band...Had moderate success (in the US) with a version of 'Wild Thing'....
Wish she'd been a wild thing with me.....

MR helliwell use to throw the black board rubber at you if he caught you talking in class and MR wilson or peanut wilson as is nickname was had not many locks on his head.can anybody remember MR wragg he use to smack the back of your hand with a ruler or across the knuckles cant remember who the music teacher was only that we had to learn the full music of the 1812 overture. yes MR addams was a judge or magastrate I can remember him sitting in the juvenile court when I got caught knicking apples as I was at school he didnt recognise me until the following day when I was walking down the corridor he pulled me up and said you boy did I see you in court yesterday yes sir came my reply my office now all i got was a good talking too. Sorry, Bigkev : your classmates' names don't ring any bells....but
I've tried to recall a few others....
Mr.Haythorn (?) - History
Was Mr.Wragg the Asst.Head?
If so, I remember him being very critical of lads coming to school wearing fur-trimmed parkas....He called them "monkey boys", and went on to give us a lecture (this was at assembly) about fashions. I recall him saying that "mark my words, Oxford bags will come round again....."
There was barely-muffled sniggering at this remark, and he went spare....
The Jthorpe girls' school was still at the bottom field at this time (don't know when they amalgamated) but the wire fence that separated the two schools wasn't up to much!
But Helen Caunt...........Oh........!
If you were lucky, you could hang around the gates and catch her walking (nay, gliding!) up Dyche Lane.....

Sorry - got sidetracked!
Other class mates that I remember :
Ian Bott : Martin Havenhand : Pete and John Fox (twins) : David Higginbotham : John Coupe : Dave O'Brien : Ian Corker : Max Clark.....
Others will come back to me, I'm sure....

Hey guy's, my sister lived with John Tate, and they had a son ,and allthough they split up i do know where John is and how he can be contacted.

The schools amalgamated in 1969, and i remember that every time they mended that mesh fence separating the 2 schools the lads just cut it down again.

hey riffraff, sorry about the last thread it is just that I am now suffering my cold turkey spell as started and my craving for a beer is getting worse. I have got to suffer now for at least 2 weeks hence thats why I was really low yesterday. didnt mean to say them things to you but if you have never been in this situation then you wont know what it is like, it is sheer hell and everybody normally cops it when I am down like this. but thats the joy of being an alcoholic so sorry for yesterdays out burst. what I normally do is not talk to anybody or even write I just lock myself away and in a short time things start to pick up and I am my normal self again. so as I said please forgive my out burst I am not normally like this.

Bigkev -
You're right - I've never been there.
You're right - I don't want to be there.
You're right - I'll therefore never know what you're going through.
Where you're wrong is that you seem to think that nobody will be on your side and support you...
You've my vote for a start.....
Anybody who can come clean like you have (and apologise to boot) gets my respect...
So, good on you - best of British to you.
Apology accepted, not really required, end of subject....

I used to live on Lowedges road and went to Jordanthorpe school in the 70s. The french teacher was always seemingly drunk, and the history teacher could be advised what mark to give for homework. There was a group of older lads from the "terminus" bit of Lowedges that formed a band and always sang "Have you ever been to Stoke on Trent i dont know, have you ever been to Stoke on Trent i dont think so!" on the back of the late bus from town. Does anyone remember them?

Don't know if you are still interested in Ian. I have only just found this site. I am married to Ian's sister Sue. At this moment he is living at old whittington, Chesterfield. As an extra note some people may be sad to know that Jordanthorpe school, both north and south buildings have just been flattened and a new building erected in the middle. ratbasher.

jordanthorpe secondry modern school
After coming down from Scotland in 1956, I was at Jordanthorpe 1957 - 1963.

Head and deputy head: messrs. Adams and Rookes
French language: chalkie White
Sports: 'Hawkeye' - Newton? Hawthorne?

At age 15, we sat RSA examinations and the following year, GCE O levels, for those who wanted to stay on.

Living in Norton Lane, most people I knew were in Greenhill and Woodseats. My social loop included Bob Grimbley, Donald Corbey, Peter Wragg, Don White, Dave Jenkinson, Stuart Stenton, Angela Brindley. We got up to all sorts of mischief in the fomer aerodrome and the former prisoner of war camp.

I attended Jordanthorpe the first year it became a comprehensive - Sept 1969. Miss Prebble was head then and scared us all to death by turning up to the first assembly in her university gown! We had to commute between the North and South buildings and it was not fun in the depths of winter scurrying up and down the path that ran parallel to Dyches Lane. Does anyone remember the art teacher that drove the bubble car? I also remember with great affection Mr White and Mr Grenville. What about the over the top music teacher Miss Wood? I enjoyed school, so how come I left with the minimum of qualifiactions and had to go back to school when I was 40 to get a good job? My primary school was Lowedges but I remember it being Bradway County when I first went there. I grew up on the Lowedges (Lowedges Drive and Lupton Road) and still go back regularly. It is so sad to see the way it has gone down hill. I dont remember it being that way at all.

Just found this thread - happy days.

I should have started Jordanthorpe in '69 but was in hospital so I didn't start until '70. As I'd missed a year I was held back and had to work my way up to the second year. I remember walking across the field between both buildings before they built the path - it was horrible in winter especially when the field had been churned up by the football/rugby/hockey etc teams. I also remember Miss Wood. I was in the group with no sense of music so she used to play her classical LPs - I still love Peer Gynt, Fingal's Cave and The Plants Suite. I remember Mr Biggin and the trip to see the Tutenkahmum exhibition in London. I also remember cookery and the meal I had to cook for the staff - toad in the hole followed by pineapple upside down pudding with custard. Never got anywhere with sewing although I do remember the sewing teacher making us observe the two minute silence one November 11th. The memories are flooding back - the drama teacher Mr Beech gave the class some fencing epees one day, luckily it was a bloodless lesson. Then there was the school production of 'The Mikado'. Other teachers - Mr Grenville, Miss Castledine (I think she married the RE teacher), Mr Stocks, Mr Porter, the biology teacher who added to human biology as she was pregnant at the time, the teacher who I thought looked like the actor Darren Nesbit. Of course Miss Prebble and Miss Upperdine. I could drone on and on and on, but I won't.

Remember the days of the old school yard, we used to laugh a lot.

Hi, left jordanthorpe in 1962, so may be a bit early for you, but a lot of the teachers names ring a bell with me although I am bad with names. Girls school wasn,t ready when I first went there but was opened shortly after. My first year was spent in the annex at greenhill, or was it Bradway. Told you I was ad with names. Live in Spain now. Years have flown by Alex. Lot of water gone under the bridge since then. I do remember Carl, nice family, who would have thought Pat and Jill would end up together. Dad enjoyed that job at graves park, I only ever remember catching sticklebacks tho' sadly he passed away in 2002, also a bad heart. Mom went last year with cancer god bless 'em both.

I'm not quite a grandad yet, we have one son Marc aged 23, loves 'em and leaves 'em so to speak, don't think we will hear wedding bells for some time if he has his way. Sign of the times I suppose.

Nice to hear from you mate. If you know the whereabouts of any of the names mentioned give us a bell. Cant send a PM until I've made a few more posts.

Take care buddy

Hello used to go to school and the Nether Edge Hall for Northerrn Soul with Shawn. Wondered how he was doing. Last saw him around 10 years ago at the Boardwalk watching his pals band play (Dizzy Club). Some of my friends still follow the local Northern scene KGB City Limits etc. But I dont think he,s been seen at those venues. Was told he lived in Barcelona for a while. Seem to remember all my Woodseats pals being at school with your sister.

A great mate of mine at the school was Andy Harrod. We played rugby together and he was a good footballer too. If I remember correctly he became a musician.
