View Full Version : Why are Sheffield Council Such Idiots ?

Sheffield Council really are so stupid when it comes to parking in the city...

I live at West. One on the Cavendish Street side, and since the rent is expensive enough, cant really afford a parking space at the minute..

I've always been able to park right outside usually for nothing though as i work during the day, and return after metered parking has ended (18:30), or if i am home during the day or on Saturday's i can usually get in at the bottom of the street where there are no road markings - hence free parking.

Now however the council has decided to paint yellow lines all the way to the bottom near the pedestrian bit outside Springfield School.

Not content to make it a single yellow, they have decided to paint double yellow lines.
- when they can get room to paint them that is... its usually really busy and they have been painting bit by bit today as cars have moved... but it looks like they'll paint all the way down...

My point is : why double yellow lines ? there are meter bays further up and across the road so why make this double yellows?
They could add more bays and have about another 10 metered parking spaces, but instead have decided to allow no parking on that entire stretch... i understand they will want to try and stop people parking there for free, but now no-one will be able to park at all.... what a pointless waste..

Why?

The only thing i can think is that they know that those 10 spaces will be too irresistable and people will park in them. They are probably banking on extra revenue from parking tickets....

I know they are out issuing them, as last friday loads of cars on the street had them... and without cause as at that point there were no road markings and tickets shouldnt have been issued...

Am i the only 1 who thinks that they are trying to lure people into parking illegally ? they should just add more legitimate spaces...

Bloody idiocy !

well is there any other explanation as to why they wouldnt simply add more parking spaces to the street? they would bring in more money if there was more meters...

All part of the Long-term plan!

Car parking will be rationalised and multi-functional shared surface areas created wherever possible to help improve the pedestrian experience of the quarter. Parking will be provided in the form of underground/basement parking with some short stay on-street parking.

From Council webpages (http://sccplugins.sheffield.gov.uk/urban_design/quarters_devonshire_principles.htm) describing plans for the "Devonshire Quarter" within which you fall.

all well and good, but the underground/basement parking they refer to costs a bomb... in West. One spaces start around £60 per month.... which on top of the rent makes it too expensive for many..

you could always vote:

conservative, lib dem, green party, UKIP @ the next election, but oh no....the labour wasters (£££ wasters) are in power...so expect to be ripped off.

these are the people who live in derbyshire (the posh part) who make the decisions on parking & allsorts dont live in the areas we do.

get involved & make an informed change, get the labour wasters out of sheffield.

Your ignorance is showing cheifgaffer. Unless I'm mistaken, I do not believe that any of the Sheffield MPs live in Derbyshire (posh part or otherwise). I believe that nearly all of them live in Sheffield (apart from one who lives in Barnsley).

Also, MPs are not responsible for making decisions on parking - that is a responsibility of the city council.

cheifgaffer? Maybe you need demoting?

If you choose to live in 'inner city' apartments then it seems that you are aspiring to a particular type of lifestyle offered by the people who built the flats. Perhaps the questions to answer are :

Why did them make the place with insufficient parking?
Why should the council produce parking spaces out of a hat for developers who've not thought their project through?
If the parking places are GBP 60 a month, and you need one, then surely you budget for it and include it in your calculations as to whether you can afford it?

I assume you need a car daily for work - if you live and work in the City Centre then why have a car? Why not rent one for the times when taxis, buses and trams won't do the trick?

I no longer have a car - I use buses or walk to work, taxis when I need them and when going to other cities coach or train. For holidays, etc. will probably hire. Works out much cheaper, and only slightly less convenient provided you plan stuff! :) (I live out of the city centre, and have both drive and garage parking if needed, so for me it was choice rather than necessity.)

Joe,

All valid points in your post except for this one.

There is parking space available within the complex.
It is 'bandit' who does not want to pay for it!

£60 a month, that works out at only £2 a day.

I'd have thought that was a bit of a bargain for 24 hour/day city centre parking.

Exactly Foo Fighter, thats what I thought... I pay £75 a month which is only £2.50 a day. My car is protected by CCTV, only people with a key fob can come in and park, and there are regular checks done to see exactly who is parking there and who shouldn't be. (They're very keen with the clamping too, I might add)
You get your own space that is all yours and you get the added peace of mind that your car is off the streets, in a safer environment.

If I couldn't afford a parking space, I wouldn't be too happy about leaving my car outside on the street. I honestly don't know what to suggest to help bandit out... You just got to pay it I guess. Just be thankful that your money isnt going to the council.

I used to work near West One, and often used to park in the
Car Park that's provided on Cavendish Street, behind the Swim Inn pub.

Often, people double parked on Cavendish Street, making it dangerous. I know of one accident which occured because of people double parking.

Bearing in mind there's a school at the bottom of the road, maybe the council were concerned about safety?

If you can't afford to pay for a parking space in West One, why not speak nicely to the attendent on the car park accross the road and ask how much it would cost to park in there overnight?

i know it might sound cheap to equate £60 per month to £2 a day...

but i work in manchester 5 days a week, so id be paying out loads of money for a space that i dont use half the time..

anyway its not the fact that im opposed to paying to park on the street... i dont mind using the meter's its only usually on saturdays that i have to pay, as the bays are free to park in after 6:30pm and on sundays...

my problem is that it seems as though the council havent thought about using the space properly... painting double yellow lines all the way down one side of the road seems pointless... yes there is a school at the bottom but that area has already been pedestrianised...

why not just add a few more bays instead of wasting about 10 car lengths of space ??

That's the council for you bandit - never have been very bright. As for issuing tickets before the lines have been painted, that's just nonsense and if the people involved appeal I doubt they'll have much problem getting it revoked - yes I know I'm stating the obvious :D

Stop moaning. It's a nightmare trying to juggle all the different needs of all the different people who live/work/shop/visit a city. There IS car parking available at West One, and it's good value as Caprice & foo fighter have pointed out. You should have calculated the cost of parking when you moved there.

I think that Councils could save money by NOT painting double yellow lines. I mean, what are they there for ?

Councils should save on the wasted paint.

I have been a car driver for over 30 years now.

If you want to park on double yellows, just flick on your hazard warning lights. Everybody else does.

Dumping of rubbish at traffic lights is also encouraged nowadays. A 'red traffic light' means stop, open windows, and dump rubbish and fag ends out of the windows into the street, it seems.

Certain establishments, such as kebab houses, are exempt from their customers being done by Police .

A certain video shop/off license owner, in my home town, even washes his car on one of the 'main drags' on double yellows.

I suppose people thowing litter at red lights is the council's fault as well.....?
