View Full Version : Perfect Sunday?
WintersMist 12-10-2003, 12:30 Sundays used to be 'day of rest' but now that phrase seems to have faded into the past. Shops are open, people work and really it can be seen as an ordinary working day.
Sundays for me are for lazing around, chilling and not doing much! Mornings are for recouperating from the night before and afternoons for watching crap telly and surfing the net. Sunday evenings I go out to the pub and see my friends. To some people this may seem really dull and boring but I love my Sundays.
What does everyone else do?
Funny you should mention that, up until today I've always work on a Sunday. Today's my first Sunday off in probably a year and a half!! And... I'm really really bored!! But working 45 hours a week and then going to do Sunday at a different place was a bit too much for a sprog like me!

Lazy day, Sunday afternoon,
Like to get your feet up, watch TV.
Sunday roast is something good to eat,
Must be lamb today 'cause beef was last week.
So full up, bursting at the seams,
Soon you'll start to nod off, happy dreams,
Wake up, for tea and buttered scones
Such a lot of work for you Sunday Moms.
It's such a crying shame
Week after week the same
Today's heaven-sent and you're feeling content,
'Cause you've worked all week long.
Still, it's quite sad tomorrow's so bad
I don't feel too strong.
Lazy day, Sunday afternoon,
Like to get your feet up, watch TV.
Sunday roast is something good to eat,
Now it's almost over till next week.
That's how your life goes by
Until the day you die

Of course you can. Don't sell yourself short. It doesn't matter where you work IMO, Sunday is a Sunday. It's not an ordinary working day. If retailers want to be greedy and open on these days then they should pay staff accordingly.

Tell me,
In your line of work are you still required to take an annual test? And if so, what happens if you should fail that test?
kittykat 12-10-2003, 19:35 I work sundays too and just get paid basic wage as my contract is just for sundays so they get out of paying me extra by making me work whatever hours they want me to - ie, evenings and the odd saturday but because im only SUPPOSED to work sundays i still only get paid the basic wage. I get 4 Sundays off a year and a perfect sunday would definitely be any of these 4 sundays.
The type of people who shop on sundays ive noticed are the occasional shoppers who dont come very often and dont particularly like shopping. They sometimes can be better than the professional shopper - who likes the best service possible - but can also be worse as they want to know where everything is and what to do and how to pay and how to get to some shop right at the other end of the mall.
Sundays should be spend lazing around doing nothing at all - failing that come to my shop and buy something so i dont get bored out of my brain.

I remember a time when everything shut down on Sunday, and I mean everything!!! and if anyone tried to organise an event on that day they were immediately taken to Court and stopped by the Sunday observance society.
For myself, for most of my working life due to the type of work I did, I had to work shifts, which meant that I had to work Sundays,
so I never was able to enjoy one with my family.
As for now, I really enjoy my weekends either driving in Derbyshire, to the coast or relaxing at home.

It really depends on what type of work i'm doing,at the place i'm working at the mo it doesn't really require it,but some places you have to do a re-test about every 6 months.
If you fail a test, firstly you will get laught at,a lot, then you would probably get another chance,if you fail that i think youd be shown the door as some of these tests arn't cheap, but then again i wouldn't really know as i've never failed one!!!!:D

That sounds about right. It's just someone I know was a track welder for British Rail back in the day. He told me that if he failed a certain test he would indeed be shown the door.
mr craig 12-10-2003, 22:35 Track welding tests are very expensive,so i'm not suprised about that.I was told that a training course for track welding will set you back a cool 12K for 2 weeks.
pontious 12-10-2003, 22:55 I get double time on Sundays but had one off today.
I had a fabulous day!! Went for a few pints in Fagans then the Dog & Partridge (Morris was most entertaining!!) Sunaday diiner, washed pots, little snooze then a few frames of snooker..........Delightful!!!
Ideal sunday for me would be a simple day of
Up early - no point wasting a day off in bed
Walk with the dog in Derbyshire
Back home sit down read paper with lots of tea
Sunday Lunch with family and a bottle of red wine
Snooooooooze!
Play badminton in the evening and a couple of pints after.
