anyone remember Roman ridge pub sitting or walking on the wall on warm evenings with a bottle of pop and packet crisps and listening and dancing to the music outside. If you were lucky to get to sit down as it was always packed. Kids could get served inside the doorway at a tuck shop and we would run round the pub car park or on the field at the back . if you were not lucky enough to get a place on the wall we would get walked up to the horse shoe pub where there was a big garden with benches or over to fort hill pub which is still there and had a brilliant view and we used to climb on the hills at the back and run up and down the steps leading to limps field school.

Roman Ridge was on wincobank avenue, near to the flats it got demolished and has been an empty space for ages, The Horse Shoe was on Bellhouse Rd near concord park also got demolished, used to have large hut as the
function room next to it , which was a second hand shop later on, now flats have been built there. Fort Hill pub is on Fort Hill, wincobank. dont know what its like now not been since i was a kid. (many moons ago)

My nan and Grandad use to take me to the beer garden at the back of the Horseshoe,
when i was young and she always called it Afferties.
Can anyone tell me if this is what the pub use to be called, before it was the Horseshoe.

I also remember nipping round the front of the pub to where the little offsales use to be
and buying some castle crisps and a bottle of orange.

It's was always called the Horseshoe.
The nickname Afferties was, I believe, the name of a landlord at some time.

From 1968 to 1976 I lived on Maple Croft Road and went in the Roman Ridge a couple of times a week with neighbours. I remember one night , when there was a bomb scare and we all had to go out into the car park ( with glasses in hand!) until given the "all clear". We had a right laugh in the car park although might not have laughed so much if we had thought there might be a real bomb!
It was a good pub in those days with good company. I was sad to see it had gone.

The F.A. decided time both teams where given a weeks rest and the pending replay would not be played for another week making it a wednesday night game, but this time the fixture would draw a different conclusion wednesday went behind to a lucky arsenal goal early in the fist half.

Infact that was the result at the interval wednesday fans hopring for another great come back would have to live in hope because in the second half arsenal scored another goal but there was no sign of luck about this goal, wednesday spent the second half not only chasing the game but shadows to all to no avail the result was already written wednesday bravely went down two goals to nil.
If you ask any wednesdayite about that night all of us would say that wednesday players and the supporters where heroes also the wednrsday fans out number the arsenal fans in truth i was 14 and it was one of the greatest nights of my life.

In the 80's whenever you went in the Horsehoe it was packed, can't understand why it closed? In comparison, the Wharncliffe is the only pub I've ever seen a fight on Christmas Day lunchtime!!

I lived on Maple Croft Crescent and used to go in the Ridge on a regular basis until 1979 when I moved away from Sheffield. It was such a busy pub back then, the beer was delivered by tanker so it must have had a good turnover. I was amazed to learn it had closed and had been demolished.
When I was a regular it was run by a young couple, Jack and Lynda.

Reading all the comments about the 'shoe. Nobody appears to have mentioned the deep well that was discovered in the bar during renovation and modernisation work. I can't remember exact but I think it was late '70's early '80's. It was made into a feature by covering the top with a thick glass slab.

actually jonesy is right. it was left as a feature for a few weeks with a glass plate on, so customers could see it and also the star did a report on it. after a few weeks it was then concreted in and carpeted over.

I did read about the death, very sad for Dave and Alan and family. I've managed to find myself a new local, and its got a snooker room upstairs. Last Friday you would have found myself, Billy, Rowley, Frankie Law, Bob Sergeant and of all people Tony Armitage in there. Its like the Shoe revisited, without the brawling. The only two fights my new local were involved in were 1914-18 and 1939-45, mind you they won 'em both.

I called in the Horseshoe one night with a mate and we were pestered to buy the last 2 raffle tickets because nobody else wanted to part with their money and they wanted to make the draw as it was almost closing time. Reluctantly we stumped up the cash and the raffle took place. We won the one and only prize which was a big bottle of whiskey and all you could hear after that were complaints that we never used the pub and should never have won the whiskey. If they had kept their gobs shut we would have shared it out because we couldn't abide whiskey. My mates dad was given the bottle when he got home. Justice.

It's the Legion of course, the two scraps should have given it away. We'd love to accept the challenge (don't give a toss about the snooker, just an excuse for a gargle) better make it a Friday night or Billy won't be there, he's in bed by 8 the rest of the week. You could play our snooker team if you like, they've been second bottom of the bottom league since the teams conception, just ahead of Hillsborough and Hillsboroughs captain has only won one game in over 200, guess who against! Last seasons highest break was 7 away. Bring it on, lol.
