View Full Version : Waiting for a new camera...

I've just ordered a new camera. For the next few days I'll be pacing about wondering where it is, checking tracking numbers and peeking behind my curtain. Then when it arrives I'll pamper it, bestow it with love and look after it. After a few weeks I'll just be slinging it into my camera bag. Is this what its like to be a father ?!

Anyone else act this way when waiting for new gear ?

Oh yes for real we have a delivery every week near enough off eBay.

I must admit something are worth the wait and some  quiet frankly not worth the wait.

at the moment i'm waiting for my new 'Tactical' MOLLE camera case/pouch and level 3 MOLLE 3 day pack from Australia.

Gris you will love it, although the controls are more like a 10/20/30D than a traditional 1 series so take a little getting used to.

Hope you have ordered many many large capacity CF / SD / SDHC cards to got with it ;)

Don't worry about battery life, the new cells are like the Duracell bunny they go on and on and on etc.

You will really be able to test you lenses now :)

Thought I was the only one daft enough to buy a 1 series which has dubious focus ability.

I've got about a dozen 2GB CF cards so should be OK, just need to change them round a little more often :)

The controls are a bit different to my 1D IIN but hope I'll get te knack soon after I get it !

The 2200 shot battery life is fabulous, will be good to have decent power even in the cold - and the batteries are so much smaller and lighter than in my current body. Yay !

Hope it arrives in time for my trip to Liverpool for tall ships later this month, will be great with my big lens on it, which really sucks up battery juice for the image stabiliser :(

Oh I wish I could travel through time and get it now :)

i only get just over 400'ish on RAW 6.3mp on a 4gb mem-card , will that work out about 120'ish shots at 21mp on 4gb ?

Jeez Grissom - how do you justify one of THOSE???

Nah - I'm only jealous! You realise that if you bring it to a photo sig meet we'll all want to touch it - just to say we have!

I think it should be less, as I'm using a 12mp and got only 140ish on a 4GB card. So it will be halve of that..around 70ish.

BTW, great camera  Can't fault you for the excitment. :hihi:

Apparently you get 618 RAW files on a 16GB CF card - so 154 on 4GB or about 77 on each 2GB card :)

I'm getting the camera now as (a) people are buying larger file sizes on istockphoto (I can only sell up to Large size with current body - will be able to go up to XXL with new one) and (b) in the autumn I will be able to submit images to Getty via istock, and the bigger files will help there too :)

I'll bring it to photo meets for sure

Why not upsample. The idiots who decided on file size as an indication of quality won't notice.
Alamy had/has, not looked recently, a file size criteria in MBs not resolution, duh and not only that, it was based on film scans' filesizes which are way bigger than digital originated images for the same quality.

I'm glad the 1D + 1Ds have moved to the 'amateur' interface as it's so much better than the clunky 'professional' design. Not sure why professional has to mean more difficult to use.

.... Not sure why professional has to mean more difficult to use.
So the pesky amateurs are less likely to interfere in the pro industry :)

It's more so Pro Kit has a mystique. :gag: Amateurs have the luxury of time to faff with fiddly kit, it's the pros that need easy to use, which also in fact means faster/more powerful. The poltroons who are in charge of marketing, don't understand this, so amateurs get easy to use and pros get fiddly. I've seen numpties object to Adobe making PS easier to use as it's a Pro Application.:loopy:

You don't know what I changed it to, though.
Even I don't know.
What ever it is it's a mystery.

Well they tried to deliver my camera today whilst I was at the day job, so will collect my new baby after work tomorrow. It's amazing how the spare battery I ordered from Hong Kong arrived before a body posted in the UK (they had to wait for one to come in from Canon..... oooooh fresh stock !) :)

Unfortunately istockphoto dont allow upsizing... which is odd really when Getty allow it. Hey ho. I'll probably make more on istock with my images than i will on Getty from what I have seen of PhotoDisc sales to date for those on istock and Getty :)

Gris is it an original battery? If so what did it cost including any VAT, duty, etc. etc.

Hi

Yes original Canon battery from onestop digital :

http://www.onestop-digital.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=44_46&products_id=454

£79.99 incl. VAT, postage etc. Probably could have got it similar in UK but usually start with onestop now and I wanted the Canon battery rather than one made by someone else.

Got my camera today. Few bits of dust on the sensor but after a number of cleaning cycles the big ones are gone. AJ Purdy gave me a free 8GB CF card with the camera - its a 300x Lexar so thats nice. Still a bit slow though. Put a couple of images on the photo pimp thread. I will have to clean my house much more thoroughly - now I can see all the dust on everything :(

Can't believe how much smaller the new style batteries are, and so much lighter :)

Hmm - maybe a new hoover should be considered a must-have accessory for a 1DSmkIII and a macro lens!

Or you could try a 100-400 zoom - that seems to suck up dust very nicely. :hihi:
