View Full Version : Flash Drive's or Data stick for storage purposes
I recently purchased a brand new flash drive and have half filled it, but now It will not take any more pics, a message comes up saying :
"Cannot create or replace this file, the directory or file cannot be created".
Can any expert on flash drives, please tell me why this is happening ?
Thank you in advance for any help.
I guess it could be that it has become corrupted. If you can copy the data off it and store it somewhere else, it might be worth then trying to format it.
Thanks you, I will try doing as you say, there is a switch on the side for locked and unlocked, I have got it in the unlocked position, so I know it is not that, once again, I appreciate your reply.
Halevan.

When you plug the stick into the PC a drive letter is assigned to it, This could be any letter but it's unlikely to be A,B,C or D as these are already assigned to Floppy Drives (A & B), Hard Drive (C) and CD/DVD Drive (Usually but not always D).
Other drives, Card Readers etc may have other letters already assigned so i can't say what letter will be given to the stick.
Assuming XP.
Plug in your memory stick
Double click "My Computer" - A window should open showing your drives
Double click the last drive on the list, (I'm only guessing but this will probably be the memory stick)
You should now see your files and be able to use them as normal.
My Computer : then removeable disc ,g are h, then open ? What does g are h mean ?
Open "my computer".
there will be a list of removable storage discs and each is given a capital letter. one of which will be your memory stick.
My Kingston stick is H, yours may be different.
Mine is H because the floppy drive is A the hard discs are C, D and E.
The DVD reader/writers are F and G.
HTH
Also Windows XP usually takes a peek at the contents of a flash drive when it's inserted and pops up a list of programmes or things you can do with it, depending on what types of files it can find.
waddler8 22-09-2009, 22:03 Be aware there are some counterfeit Memory sticks going round (e-bay) where the stated drive size and the actual drive size are considerably different, even though windows might seemingly report the correct size for the drive.

This memory stick is OK as it came from John Lewis Ltd today. Thanks for all your advice, I have saved all the replies, as they are a great help. Thank you!:)

swarfendor43 25-09-2009, 17:35 What I like about Linux it is so less confusing than Windows as far as memory sticks are concerned - it even places an icon of a memory stick/flash/pen drive what ever your preference on the system tray (or on your desktop depending on your flavour of Linux!
Also you get instant previews of pics in Linux which you can enlarge (the icons that is).

This is the same on OS X too. Drives appear on your desktop as you mount them.
