Hi

I have recently placeed in a second CD drive into my PC as a slave drive. Once I hd done this and connected it properly, it wasn't recognised by the system, and it also stopped the Primary CD drive from being recognised as well.

All I did was take the CD Drive from a very old P1 system (this is still regarded as a fast CD Drive,X52, that can be purchased from creative.) and place straight into my P4 550 system.I plugged it into the Power Unit and the slave connection of the CD Drive cable.

Is there anything that i have done wrong?

Thanks

Tom

p.s the person than can help me gets a banana dancing partner

I know it seems like a patronising thing to say, but have you changed the jumper settings on the back of the cd drive from master to slave setting?

Have you checked the BIOS? If the slave channel is set to NONE rather than AUTO it may not be detecting it.

You sound like you know what you are doing but I'll describe the basics just in case.

1 - Ensure the master has the jumper set to Master and the slave has it set to Slave

2 - Put the Master at the end of the cable

3 - Double check both are connected the right way round if there isn't a notch in the connector it is easy to get wrong. The red line on the cable should match up with Pin 1 on the drives.

4 - Check that the new drive did still work before being installed

5 - Check that all the relevant stuff is enabled in the bios and set to AUTO

thanks. Ill check tomorrow, something to pass the time anyway.

btw, i didnt really have much of a clue what 2 do, it was just a case of knowing where each cable goes. But it did work last time it was tested. mind you, that was a year ago. But i know that it does open and shut though, cos i didnt disconnect that

The jumpers on both drives need to be set properly. The one on the end of the cable should be master, and the one in the middle on slave. Alternativly, set them both to CS (cable select) and theyll automatically assign themselves to master/slave depending on which connector theyre plugged into.

How do I actually do this. I think it might just be the fact that the slave drive used to be a primary drive. I tried this morning, but I had not really got a clue what I was doing, apart from knowing which cable goes where

take the drive out of the computer, and look at the back, where the cables plug in. Somewhere on the back theres a row of pins, with 2 of them covered by a little plug (also known as a jumper). There should be some writing nearby, itll say something like MA, SL, CS. You need to put the little jumper over the 2 pins that correspond to the way you want the drive set up, so for a master drive, put it on the pins underneath MA, for slave, SL, and for cable select, CS. This picture (http://images.anandtech.com/reviews/faqs/129/cdrom.jpg) might help (ignore the method 1,2 and 3 stuff, its not relevant to this)

I didn't want to be the only one to have wasted my time on that and admitted it.

But i know that it does open and shut though, cos i didnt disconnect that Look at the back of the drive, you'll see a row of pins (2 by 4) with a plastic jumper on it, to put the drive to Slave, look on the top (generally is) for some engraving or a sticker, it'll tell ya how to put the jumper so it's slave :)

The sticker/engraving should tell you:

CS, SL, and MA (for Cable Select, Slave and Master).
CS is good stuff for drives, so you choose which CD drive you want as what (master or slave).

EDIT: Only just realised slh73 basically said exactly that... duh
