I didn't know they did a tour either, but I surveyed it a few months ago for Dean's list of WW1 memorials, and there are some incredible monuments there , as well as some fascinating ones that really tell a story. There's also the grave of Sheffield's WW1 VC holder, Arnold Loosemore.

In many ways it's a better graveyard than the more famous General Cemetery because it's well maintained and hasn't been turned into a bit of a theme park, unlike the GC.

The final part of the story is missing. He was given a fitting funeral organised by the City Council, procession from Hillsborough to Ecclesall with crowds lining the streets, service by the Bishop etc. Then his penniless widow was sent a bill for the whole thing by the Council!

Hi. I don't live in Sheffield anymore but I am doing my family tree and I would really like to ask if one of you nice people who live near Ecclesall Church would do a little research on my behalf. There is a gate at the back of the church (I think it is actually on High Storrs Road. Anyway it is opposite to Tulibardine Road). I was told that my grandfathers grave is along the path leading from the gate to the church. His name was Thomas Laxton. I have not been able to get back over to Sheffield to check and would be very grateful if one of you would be kind enough to check this information for me. He died in 1931. I thank you in advance and cross my fingers.

Hi Duffems
managed to get down there this morning, but drew a blank on both spotting a grave and on the burial records. I've PM'd grannypat to see if there are any more details.

Shabby way to treat a local hero and his widow. Did they even bother to name a street or a road after him?

Apparently, a road was named after him in Sheffield 12 and a blue plaque was put in place but, like anything nowadays, the sign has been vandalised and removed several times, I'm not sure whether it's now back in place. There was a photo of it, I'll try to find it.

I traced my rellies buried there by contacting the Vicar by e-mail. This is back in 2001, so there may be anew vicar there now. The address then was

peter.williams@ecclesall.parishchurch.org.uk. He looked up the grave locations, and had a site map at the office when I

Yes algy, that's one of them but, there was also the usual road name sign plus a small blue plaque which I believe was also removed due to vandalism. I suppose that the actual road name sign is still in place though.
