My LAYLA has really red itchy feet ears and head. She was like it when we got her a month ago so we took her to the vets. They did some scrapes and said she had sarcopic? mange forgive me if I haven't spelt it right. We were given 3 months of frontline stronghold for her and we have her on a dried food with no artificial colours preservatives. She also has some ear mite drops and antibiotics [ expensive month at the vets:o] but she still scratches and bites and is making her ears and head bleed. She is quite pink.It does't seem to be getting better.

I would take her back to the vets or change your vet.

Aww, poor itchy Layla!

Sacoptic mange is caused by a teeny little mite, called Sarcoptes.

It might be the infestation has cleared up, but that there is residual irritation in her skin (a bit like when we humans get chicken pox or something, and we still have itchiness after the initial condition has gone, but we still have the raw, scabby skin. she might benefit from some anti histamines to hep relieve her itching.

The current vet/ another vet would be best placed to advise you on what would be best, and prescribe the appropriate treatment.

Sarcoptic mange can cause long standing inflammatory effects in the skin for a period of weeks after the mange mites have been killed. Your vet can help with information about getting this to calm down, whether that's with using a skin calming shampoo or using antihistamines or moisturisers.

I'm sure that things have advanced a lot in treating Mange conditions in our pets.

I STR when I was younger, a dog that had the Demodectic variety of Mange was more ofthen than not PTS :wow: as Incurable  !!

even half a mite is a mite, I'm afraid. however, it's best to speak to the vet who will, I'm sure be able to prescribe some antihistamine tablets to dampen down the itching for the poor little lass.

My old lad is very allergic to flea bites and grass, and we had some adventures in treating his "FAD" :_ Flea Allergy Dermatitis, poor old lad, he used to get awful, crusty welts on his back, particularly round his rump... it was miserable for him.

I also remember him having a really frightening reaction to a plant, when he was a pup. His little face swelled all up like a balloon, and he started wheezing. we were really scared, and had to rush him to the vet.

We look after 11 Shar Peis for one gentleman and when one of those had mange, he had to bathe it in a special shampoo twice a day and apply creams for several weeks. The other dogs were also treated as a precaution. I'd definitely have another word with your vet.

Wanting the best of health for your "baby" is not wrong! :D

If you notice that there's something wrong, then they deserve to be checked out!

If you're using Piriton as your histamine, it may be useful to know you can ask for a pack of 500

they cost about the same as the bubble pack of 30!

They usually order them for you so you collect next day, and the shelf life is a couple of years so should do you more than one season

Oh no Waddy - poor u lot and poor Layla
I treated her with frontline when she came in - as we do all of the dogs.
I hadn't realised she was so sore. Like strix says - normal histamines i think can also be got from the chemist.
Any drugs - esp. frontline can be bought on line via our front page with PETMEDS
you can use something like Aludex wash - which is a rough / harsh shampoo which will kill external mites - whilst the frontline will kill internal . which is certainly should've done by now.
Try the Aloe Vera plant to sooth any redness or inflamation on her skin
I would also change her diet - my english bull bitch is a nightmare for skin problems - and is constantly rubbing and itching if she gets anything other than those natural mix meals from p@h. ( i buy them on line too).

Best wishes and thoughts for you all
