There was two 'Crown & Anchor' pubs listed in the 1852 directory.

One on Stanley Street, licensee - William Mallinson
Another on Bright Street, licensee - Charles Mosley

Oops...but none on Corporation Street

Which census ? You could have a look through the directories for the same period in the Local Studies Library.

1871 census, I looked again and I was correct
It was on corporation street near to workhouse lane, which I think was at the top of corporation street somewhere:confused:

Gives you a b****y headache some times tracing the family history does`nt it

Workhouse Lane is still there, - between the new Law Courts and Corporation Street. To get to it you need to go down Corporation Street and take the first right turn [Spring Street], then right again.

I doubt whether any of the old buildings are still standing, but thirty years ago when I used to catch the 47/48 bus from Bridge Street there were quite a few of them left.

The workhouse it refers to used to stand on Alma Street where the Globe Steel Works are (were?), but was removed to what is now Northern General Hospital. I'm not sure when the new Corporation Street was driven through, probably sometime in the 1860s

Here's a couple of photos of the area.....

Family history is a lot easier these days now much of the info is available on line ;)

Thanks GB, I have already seen these photos
I`ve traced most of the family history back to 1623, but I just couldn`t find anything for this, perhaps it was just a beerhouse, but the census does`nt give a number, just the name:rolleyes:

You goin back all those years !!! showing your age now GB;)

Thanks
