View Full Version : Port 80 is driving me mad
Lickable 14-04-2005, 14:32 I rang Pipex after Mozilla, explorer, msn etc... wouldnt connect and they said it was a problem with port 80 and it needed opening. They also told me they couldnt help. PAH!
The Modem clearly makes the initial connection.
My Network no longer works too.
I was wondering if any of you loverly people could help.
I am using XP Pro, with Zone alarm and Nod 32 Antivirus.
Thanks
can you ping www.yahoo.co.uk
can you ping 217.12.3.11
lonesome 14-04-2005, 15:00 If it's a problem with port 80 then MSN should work as I'm pretty sure this uses different ports. Can you still use outlook/thunderbird to check emails?
Have you tried turning antivirus and firewall off briefly just to eliminate them as the cause?
If you posted this in the early hours of this morning then my girlfriend had a similar problem on tesco broadband. First of all it would let us connect but not actually access anything, then it wouldn't even let us connect. Finally we unplugged it all completely and left it for awhile then tried again and it was working.
The port 80 thing sounds alot like customer service speak for "we don't have a clue go away and work it out for yourself".
Regards,
Grant
MSN doesn't use port 80, sounds like it could be a few things but personal firewall's can cause this. First of all open a command prompt and type
ipconfig
And tell us what it says.
Dude, port 80 is the port for all your internet browsing. ZoneAlarm doesn't go so far as blocking ports, it does it by program name (which is why it's so laughable as a "firewall"), so it shouldn't be that unless you've said that nothing can get out.
Are you running SP2'd XP?
evildrneil 14-04-2005, 16:45 Port 80 is the default port for webservers (well Apache anyway - I've not run any others but assume they are the same) to bind to when they run - are you running a webserver? If not theres no reason (as far as I can see) why you should be using port 80!

This is correct, if it's you who cannot connect then it wouldn't be anything wrong with YOUR port 80, it would be the remote port 80 that is blocking connections. Obviously this seems unlikely because every site would not be blocking connections on port 80. Are you sure the person at pipex knew what they were talking about?

well, you obviously use port 80 when contacting any other webserver external to your own system.
It depends on what they mean by a problem though.
Zonealarm in lock down mode blocks all outgoing connections as well, this would stop the web browser contacting anything.
Try the pings, if you get a response from them then your actual connectivity is fine. If you don't then it's a larger problem and customer service were talking rubbish (as they probably were anyway).
Looks like we all agree that the call centre person was talking rubbish.
However the actual problem could be anything as in the original post it says that nothing will actually connect to the internet. Not just their browser.
I agree with Cyclone though that ZoneAlarm in lockdown will stop all internet traffic. In the past i've had zonealarm totally forget what the permissions where for each program and that did something similar.
If it's not that then make sure that in the connections setting under IE is using pipex and not some rogue dialer thats racking up some huge bill. The pipex call centre should at least be able to talk you through that.
Lickable 15-04-2005, 15:54 I am quite sure pipex were talking rubbish.
The problem, really is quite annoying as i cant access the internet, but can connect, can't connect to a network.
Explorer
Mozilla
Msn
Outlook
None of these work.
Pipex could see that i was connected, but could sort the problem.
try going to a command prompt and typing:
"tracert www.sheffieldforum.co.uk"
Cut and paste the results here upto the first set of "* * *" or "destination unreachable" (if there is one).
If that comand doesnt work at all it maybe that the TCP/IP protocol has become corrupted. If you have the latest service pack (SP2) handy reinstalling it can *sometimes* fix the problem.
Turning off Zone Alarm while your doing all this is probably a good idea.
tom_a_west 15-04-2005, 23:01 I had a similar problem and using system restore fixed the problem. I woud try that If I were you
PROXY SERVER!!!!!! *shouts a bit too loud and now everyone is looking at him*
Proxy servers use port 80 and screw everything up! Check to see if you are using one!?
