View Full Version : Nappy rash, can anyone offer advice?
x_LoUiSe_x 14-04-2005, 14:19 My little girl is 19months old and has got quite bad nappy rash. She keeps pooing every couple of hours and its making her sorer and sorer. I keep puttin sudo crem on and she has decent nappies (pampers) and i only use cotton wool and water, as i found she was allergic to wipes when she was tiny.
ive tried canestan cream which the doctor prescribed but it doesnt seem to be helping.
anyone else got ne ideas?
she needs sum help coz she wont sit down and is walking about like a penguin!
:help: :help: :help:
Aw bless her, poor little mite :(
In the first instance I'd take her to the Doctors and get them to take a look at what could possibly be causing the rashes.
Hope that helps.

i did that before and they gave me sum canestan cream that worked before but its not working now.
just wondered if neone else had problems with their kids n what they did?
The best way to deal with this (if you are sure there's no underlying problem) is to leave her nappy off whenever possible. You might have a few little accidents, but if it's not absolutley vital she wears a nappy ie. if you have to take her out, then this will help. Good old fresh air to the botty is usually sufficient!
Sometimes sudocrem clogs up disposable nappies so that they are less effective at absorbing water and make the nappy rash worse. Make sure that your little girl is really really dry after you have used the cotton wool and water - another good thing to use if she is allergic to wipes is the really cheap flannels that you can get from pound shops (something like 8 for £1) because they are thinner than normal flannel but do a good job, then you can just stick them in a normal 40 wash. If you can (are brave enough to!), maybe try her with her nappy off for a little bit - it might help a little bit too. If you use sudocrem just use a tiny tiny little bit - it goes a long way and helps avoid clogging the nappy
I generally find that canesten does the trick for nappy rash.but I am sure your GP will try something else if it's not clearing up.
x_LoUiSe_x 14-04-2005, 15:09 thanx
ive tried leaving her with her nappy off but she seems to do a lil wee every couple of mins! so we end up wih lilwee patches all over the carpet!
will keep in mind that about sudo crem clogging up her nappy though.
if she doesnt improve over the weekend i'll take her to the docs next week.
ive also been advised to put sum salt in the water i use and in her bath.
I would also gently clean the area with cooled boiled water with salt in it as long as there are no open sores, otherwise just leave out the salt.
Hi - sorry about the nappy rash - the other advice was great - nappy off as much as possible - cooled boiled water and cotton buds etc.
However, I would be wondering why your daughter is pooing every couple of hours? That seems to be causing the problem and does seem to be a higher rate than normal. Perhaps a quick call to your health visitor may help?
Hope all goes ok.
Canesten is a fungicide, and I didn't think nappy rash was a fungus. This is perhaps why the Canesten isn't working this time.
I thought E45 was the cure for dry skin complaints? That's what my baby brother was prescribed for his sensitive skin when he had nappy rash anyway.
And salt water? My eyes are watering just thinking about it! Poor mite. Isn't she suffering enough already?

I think about 75-80% of nappy rashes are caused by a fungal (candidal I think) infection which is why canesten is often prescribed.

Ah, this'll be one of the 20-25% cases this time ;)
Thanks for setting me straight though
My son had some nasty diaper rashes around this age. I think it's because he was eating pretty much an adult diet, but still wearing diapers. If I didn't get to a dirty diaper right away, he had a rash. And he sometimes resisted being changed either because he still wanted to play, or he wanted to delay the inevitable...he knew a change would hurt because of the rash.
His older sister said his native american name was Redbutt. Ah, brothers and sisters are fun!
I finally resorted to putting him in the tub after a change. I would clean him as best I could, then let him play in a warm bath for about 15-20 minutes. And I didn't put alot of water. Just enough to cover his bottom. I also didn't use soap. Just let him soak his behind.
And whoever said letting them run around without a diaper, it really helps. I let him run around like that until his rear was bone dry. Then a little powder, and a clean diaper. His rashes eventually cleared up. And I would leave the salt out of the water. Yikes!
Good luck!

FairyNormal 14-04-2005, 20:49 Have you changed anything in her diet or given her anything new to eat or drink?
My son developed what I thought was horrendous nappy rash. The rash was only on his bottom and between his legs. His skin was fierce red and started to peel off. I took him to the doctors and it turned out he'd had a bad reaction to eggs.(he'd had them for the first time the day before) I stopped giving him eggs and then tried again 6 months later and the same thing happened.
Could it be something like this?
Apart from that, I'd do the same as everyone else, plenty of fresh air to the skin and give her plenty of water to drink to help dilute her urine.
Good luck!
my grandaughter had the same problem, we tried my grannies old remedy, fullers earth, it worked wonders, so it may be worth a try, I bought it from my local chemist

MovingOn 15-04-2005, 09:42 Okay Louise, I'm gonna let you into a huge secret...
Go the chemist and buy some Drapolene. It's expensive, but one tub should last you forever. (approx £3)
My son was allergic to Sudocreme and his poor little bum was red raw and bleeding. :o( When I complained to the company, it became obvious very quickly that it wasn't the first time they'd had complaints, because they came back with a billion different questions.
Anyway, I was recommended Drapolene and bought it - it changed my life (and I've always used Pampers on my children.)
Also, you could try leaving the nappy off and sitting her on a potty every 10 - 15 mins.
x_LoUiSe_x 15-04-2005, 11:48 thanx everyone!
her rash is looking a little better 2day, probably coz she hasnt pooed since last night!
i was reluctant to use salt neway coz i was told to put it in my bath after she was born n it bloody hurt!!
im gonna try the potty thing as suggested by MovingOn coz she keepos weeing all over the floor!
i dont think shes allergic to the sudo crem though coz ive been using it since she was born and shes only had nappy rash this bad a couple of times.
she hasnt been eating anything different so i dont think thats the cause.
i dont use soap or anything on her coz shes allergic to all that neway, and i use e45 and oilatum bath oil and cream aswell for her dry skin on her legs.
Thanxs for all ur advice!
Let your baby have some 'free' time out her nappy and I've heard that egg white works (beaten) or my old favourite - Vaseline applied liberally.
could ave been a little germ in her poo.
If its getting better now she's pooing less.
I remember my son had this and it came after he had finished with a tummy bug.
