I can't find a smiley anywhere close to what I'm thinking.

Call your ISP and get them to turn it up a bit, someone must have knocked the speed dial.

All that means is that when you first switched your router on it "synced" with your local exchange at a given speed, given your line statistics at that time of day. As the day moves on and turns to night, interference on your line increases, and the rate at which your router "synced" initially, may have become unstable at that speed.

So, when you rebooted the router later on, it will have automatically re-connected at a lower but more stable speed, given your lines statistics/condition, at that particular instance.

This can sometimes be the case, when you are a fair way from your local exchange, and your line noise levels are more critical to your speed and viability, than when you are closer to your local exchange.

I am having speed problems = my neighbour next door says they have done a speedcheck at its 2340 Khps I did one and its 460 khps and the one just down the road is 185 Khps. I live quite a way from the exchange in the middle of Cornwall but why is there such a difference between neighbours!!!!
