Davemantis 27-06-2008, 12:45 PM i think there is one but ok what would you like to talk about ? jonsastar 27-06-2008, 12:46 PM Da foot, Im really interested in learning some ground fighting techniques... I have considered jui jitsu and judo... what do you suggest... where do you teach judo.. I was gonna have a look at the one at hillsbrough but ive gone off the idea now... I also have thought about shoot fighting, (may be a bit too rough tthough) and the forge for bjj jonsastar 27-06-2008, 12:50 PM i think there is one but ok what would you like to talk about ? Me and da foot were havin a debate on multiple attackers and marshal arts that would be good for such attacks... or fights... it was on the wrong thread and I couldnt find a marshal arts talk thread so I lobbed this up to carry on the chat. I think there are several styles that are good for multiple attack, I think boxing, mu thai, wing chun... many kung fu styles.. krav maga.. and probs loads more jonsastar 27-06-2008, 12:57 PM What styles do you train in dave? Im guessing praying mantis style? DaFoot 27-06-2008, 02:05 PM Da foot, Im really interested in learning some ground fighting techniques... I also have thought about shoot fighting, (may be a bit too rough tthough) and the forge for bjj First up, I teach Judo at the Shef uni club. Only tuesdays during the summer uni break 7-9pm at Goodwin sports centre. Only small classes atm as no students about. Also teach at the Leeds uni club, but I guess that'll be a bit out of the way for you ;) I also practice at the EIS on Mondays (Attercliffe way). Now, Judo or JuiJitsu for ground game... 1st of all let me point out that to me JuiJitsu is an all round style with standing throws, locks, strikes as well as a bit of ground work. I suspect you are thinking of 'Brazillian JuiJitsu' which has become fashionable in recent years - that is much more of a ground game/sport than what I would call JuiJitsu. Judo will teach you about throws/takedowns, groundwork, armlocks (aka armbars) and strngles/chokes. The emphesis in Judo training is probably 60:40 in favour of standing technique (practice time) over groundwork. BJJ (Brazilian JuiJitsu), I have precious little experience of but am led to believe more like 90:10 in favour of groundwork over standing. So BJJ is definately the one for you pure for the ground game, however if you want a good dose of throwing with it - try Judo. The university also have a more "traditional" JuiJitsu group. DaFoot 27-06-2008, 02:07 PM The Jistu club at the uni do practice defense against multiple attackers, but that practice seems to be reserved for the higher (blue belt+) kyu grades. EDIT: Regarding the usefulness of a style against multiple attackers. The guys that get to play with this at the Jitsu club have been practicing Jitsu a couple of years at least I believe and I have seen them get 'stabbed' / clubbed etc numerous times. There are some interesting ideas they have though  jonsastar 27-06-2008, 02:32 PM The Jistu club at the uni do practice defense against multiple attackers, but that practice seems to be reserved for the higher (blue belt+) kyu grades. I am interested in the throwing as well i just think my weight would go against me on the ladings haha... Im 19 stone currently and not so light on my feet , this is why i thought bjj for some ground work.. less being thrown... flamingjimmy 28-06-2008, 02:37 PM hey Martial Arts guys, i have a question. D'you guys believe in Qi, or some equivalent 'mystical energy' that you direct around when you're practising your 'art'? My old Kung Fu teacher put me off it really badly 'cause he was feeding me all this crap about Qi, and how it's real and he can direct it to certain parts of his body and stuff. I reckon it's nonsense. Is there an equivalent thing in Jujitsu? (or any other styles you guys might do) Davemantis 30-06-2008, 10:57 AM I do tai chi wing chun and 7 star praying mantis The mantis is the art that I favor over the others as it incorporates not only the kicking and punching but also the chin na (locking) takedowns, weapons and so on. About Qi mmm this could get out of hand with some people but I will keep it simple lol Every living thing has Qi But can you use it ? Who knows I have not seen any proof in my 25+ years of training that you can transmit Qi in a fight or project it across a room lol I have seen people who say they can do it but you will only ever see them do it on people they know lol But then you could say that with every thing you do you use Qi or you would not be alive ;-) Movuing Qi around the body mmm that’s more a focus of the mind but then if you focus the mind you use Qi lol So the answer is not simple I would say do not listen to people and judge for yourself and do not believe all the mystical stuff people use to sell an art. ;-) DaFoot 30-06-2008, 11:03 AM .... Exactly why I remain sceptical. (sp?) While there are plenty of things out there I don't understand fully, this is one that I would have to experience first hand to accept fully I'm afraid. (or any other styles you guys might do) Anyone who bangs on about Chi, Qi or other "fighting spirit", definitely spends too much time playing fighting games and/or watching movies starring the likes of Bruce Lee. That is NOT what martial arts is about IMO. That is NOT what martial arts is about IMO. Don't be quite so dismissive Rich. It is something that is hard to understand and accept and while I remain skeptical I wont dismiss the idea entirely until someone that claims to be good at it has failed to convince me of it's existance/use. Davemantis 01-07-2008, 03:16 PM You can prove chi exists; Chi is an electrical current every living thing has and that can be proven. But I don’t think anyone has proven 100% they can transfer it form one to another in a fight. But I would live to see, meet and train with anyone that can ;-) A lot of people say they can but from what I have seen it’s just body mechanics, structure and the mind. You are viewing an archive.
