before I go through the downloading and trying to work out how to use GIMP - I thought i'd quickly ask if I will be able to add text to a path with it.
I want to add text in a circle, with no distortion, i've got photoshop 6 but this doeosn't have this feature.

i'd use a vector illustration package for that. raster image editors aren't much good at text.

Any ideas on a good budget/free programme that will do it?
Inkscape (http://www.inkscape.org/) is an (apparently) decent free vector drawing program, never actually used it but a quick google (http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=inkscape+text+on+a+path&btnG=Google+Search&meta=) would seem to show that what you want is possible.

Thanks for that, I did follow a few tutorials that used the Warp tool but it makes the text squished in at the edges.
I've installed Inkscape and done it straight away on there, thanks!
Thanks for guinea-pigging it for me, I've used CorelDraw before but have been meaning to install Inkscape on my Linux laptop, just needed to know if it was any good :hihi:
