This is just an update for those who read my thread about needing a cage. My beautiful rat Monty was diagnosed as a hermaphrodite by my vet and i was told she was fine to stay with boys:( I came back from holiday last monday and :o 11 babies. Mum and babies are doing well especially as she is only a baby herself but it was quite frightening for a minute. I have since changed vets.

Maybe not what you wanted, but enjoy having the baby rat-pack!

I had a ratty that had 13 in a litter - kept them in a rabbit hutch. Once the door was opened they just flowed out like water, it was great fun trying to get them all back in again :hihi:

Awww they look like they are going to have lovely markings, is the Mum a hairless? or did I misunderstand?

Kennedy
26-06-2008, 16:13
The mum is hairless, the dad is furry but carries the hairless gene. There are 8 hairless babies and 3 furries:)

They don't have special requirements although they are usually skinnier because they burn off energy to keep warm. Hairless females really shouldn't be bred from though because they have trouble lactating- luckily in this case she was able to feed her babies. Hairless are bred through hairless dads or dads carrying the gene as it is recessive.

Thank goodness she was ok to feed her babies then, she looks cute :)

Aww, thanks :) Just back from the vets with synulux and bisolven for little Hope as she's no longer responding to baytril - this is why I say "no more", that and they just don't live long enough :( My youngest died of a a PT two weeks ago (Hope's sister), seems to have been one of those "times" what with loosing Hex not so long ago.

I love the warmth of hairless ratties, they're like little walking radiators

Awwww, I'm really sorry about poor Hope and her sister. I know how you feel, itsreally heartbreaking when one goes. I know what you mean about them being like little radiators. Montys cuddles always warm me up when i'm a bit chilly. Just finished a rehoming form that i can send out so i can make sure that my babies go to the best homes.

Oh my goodness they are the cutest things I have ever seen! I have made a promise to myself not to get rats until I have moved out of home and they can have their own room!!

Oh, she is so beautuful! Are you looking for new homes for them? I've been saying for a while now I'd love to keep rats again, and hairless ones are just great!

Kennedy

Yes I am. They are free to good homes but all applications for them are subject to filling in a fairly comprehensive re-homing form so that I can get an idea of what they will live like at their new home. If the complete form is deemed suitable then you will be put on the list for the babies. If you would like a form please pm me your email address.

Aww

If you do get them - give me a shout and I'll give you the details of the cardboard shredded bale horse bedding stockist near you (and me) - they're not far from North Sheffield and it's by far the cheapest and healthiest non smelly substrate I've found. :) One bale lasts me ages, the rats love pilling it into heaps and nesting in it too, awesome stuff

All this talk of ratties I want to get some more... must resist... at least until after the move!

That cardboard bale/ratty piling thing sounds fun. I it most amusing to leave sheets of paper about for the rats and watch them try and drag them back to cage.

The last three all had differant approaches:
Lister, the energetic but a bit nervy one would try and drag the paper as he found it and really struggle as he would often be stood on the paper he was trying to move!

Dexter, the brains of the bunch, would tear of strips of paper before shifting them to the cage.

Tomsk, the fatty, would sit and eat while watching the other two do all the hard work for him... :hihi:

I miss my rats :(

When's the move? Everyone needs ratties in their life :)

I give them strips of newspaper to nest with, perhaps I'm doing all the hard work for them reading that, Mirage could definitely do with shfiting the flab?! I think they've got me a little too well trained!

When the g/f finds a new job.

I found stuffing the cage full of loosely scrunched paper would entertain the little darlings for hours as they set to work shredding it. Most amusing watching rats underneath trying to work out who was pulling the paper the other way!

I think they've got me a little too well trained!
That wouldn't suprise me at all ;) :hihi:

Awww what cute babies and the furry even has dumbo ears like its mummy.

I love ratties.....I only have two at the moment - easier to keep now I have shares in a dog. I had 37 at one time (that included 2 mums with 16 babies each).

You will have no problem re-homing them.....I love them when they are home reared. So much tamer than shop bought.

My rodents......FreddyF***Face (I didn't name him :o) and MyMateMarmite squeak hello to yours :D

Awww, bless 'em. I love rats, but with all the other animals I've got I can't really apply to take two of these little ones on. (I think my partner would be REALLY unimpressed!:hihi:)

Good luck finding homes for the ones left needing them.
