I was reading the ban " Top Gear " topic earlier on and I can't believe all these people that bang on about Public Transport. I can't remember the last time I had the misfortune to have to go on a Bus or Tram, but am in no hurry to do it again.

Do people really believe that Public Transport will replace the car? Who wants to go on a bus for a night out for instance, they don't come when you want to go out, they don't go where you want to go, who wants to sit with a load of drunken Chavs on the way home.

We should be building more Roads, bigger Motorways, have better Parking. All new properties, Houses & Offices should be made to provide of road parking for the residents and staff.

We should have Motorways for HGV and Coach's only, oh and Caravans. Increase the speed limit to at least 80mph on Motorways. Place Speed Cameras in proven accident blackspots, get rid off the purely money making ones. Remove all road humps in Sheffield, unless there is a proven need for them in that area.

By all mean's provide Cycle routes for people who like to Cycle( I do myself) But lets get real here folks, people will never give there cars up, it aint going to happen.......

Sorry to disappoint you, Seadiver, but as far as I know "The Iron Horse" is another name for the Railway Train!.

The problem with this statement is that it completely removes sensibly placed preventative humps. When I was in school, we wanted a crossing (zebra, pelican, whatever. Anything would be good) on the main road that almost all the pupils had to cross. Unfortunately, it wasn't actually near the school (where there was a crossing) so the school didn't have any say in it.

The reason no crossing was put in? There had not been enough deaths on that road to indicate that it was a danger. Children were crossing daily, yet the council would not put in a crossing until more of them were killed.

Sometimes it's better not to have to get the proof for the need...

....

Why not just cover the whole country in concrete and tarmac ? You could then paint the roads in black, the car parks in yellow and any space not required for either purpose in green, as a gentle reminder of the grass that used to grow there.

Course you'd still have a problem with 4x4s driving point to point and ignoring the colours altogether :D

No, how can a train replace a car?

A train can, on a given journey, probably replace several hundred cars. :D

But this is not an either/or argument. It's about integrating our transport systems to reduce the negative effects and expand the positive ones.
