They're nice. Who is the statue of ?

Not sure if you're looking for constructive criticism ¿ I think the steeple would be better if the top bit weren't chopped off, and the flag perhaps isnt best placed in the centre ? Otherwise very nice :)

The statue is one of four pieces of modern art installed in Mansfield in the last couple of years. It is called 'Ampitheatre' and is by David Annand.

The sculpture is designed as a place as well as a work of art. David says it is:
“A contemplative amphitheatre for people and students to meet at, chat and argue and debate”
The bronze life-size figure in the sculpture represents a leader physically holding up a broken amphitheatre, however the underlying theme is the struggle to maintain the civilised infrastructure of society. Work by a local poet dealing with the same themes has been sand blasted onto the sculpture to give people encouragement to sit and contemplate.

The other sculpture in Eric's photos is 'High Heels' by Renn and Thacker.
This 7m high stainless steel and bronze sculpture makes reference to the shoe industry, prominent in Mansfield since the mid 19th century and the powerful image of the nearby limestone clad viaduct. The same form, in the shape of a gothic arch, also features in the Bentinck memorial’ (the monument shown in Eric's pics) said Mick Thacker. “High Heels” represents Mansfield’s bustling night life – a reflection of the art’s position in the heart of the town’s entertainment quarter.

If anyone wants to learn more about Mansfield and it's history, go to the Mansfield District Council website and search for Heritage Trail.
Sorry I can't put up a link, not enough posts yet.

there is a huge 40ft+ feather made of shiny metal but it's been places in a patch of tree's that now obscure it until winter .:hihi:

Grissom , The steeple is a low standing monument , i wanted to get the top in but if i pulled it any further back i'd get the chav's that were sat around it.

Eric, the feather is on Westgate is by Wolfgang and Heron and is called “A Spire for Mansfield”

This abstract tree form ties together ideas of heritage and hope. It acknowledges Mansfield’s forest heritage and the evolution of ancient forest to coal and organic fossil fuels and the historic use of canaries in mineshafts.
The upward reaching and branching character suggests historic growth, development and exploration of the new vision for Mansfield.
A Spire for Mansfield is over 12 metres high and made from polished stainless steel and bronze.

Will try and post a pic when I get enough posts up to let me do so.

Hey thanks for the info. The feather looks fab.

I usually find chavs move out of range when waving my big camera lens their way. Homeless people are the opposite and usually ask me to take their pic :)
