I was wondering if someone could save me (yet another) trip to the vets!

I keep getting bites all over my legs and am beginning to think it's not mosquitoes but Gadgets fault :(

The thing is, he hasn't been scratching himself at all :?

Can fleas live on the furniture? Do I have to de-flea the whole house??

What is the best thing to use?

Or do you think he hasn't got them cos he's not itchy and it's just a coincidence that I've been bitten??

Thanks!

Fleas once in your house can infest everything, carpets furniture. They can also lay dormant in furnishings and only hatch when they know a meal is in the vicinity. Poor Rubydazzler is infested (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=363246)and she doesn't even have a pet to blame.

You would have to de-flea the pet and the furnishings/carpets to be sure they are gone.

Thanks foxy :(

I've just been checking out the huge flea megathread and its not good news :(

I will take Gadget to vets today and buy something to de-flea the whole house while I'm there.

I need to get it sorted ASAP cos Gadget is going to Waggytails on saturday and I don't want him to infect their dogs!

Although I'm still not convinced he actually has fleas as I haven't seen any and not seen him scratch once... but better safe than sorry! The amount of 'mosquito' bites I have on me is getting silly now...

If you go out walking in the countryside you could have bites from all the midges that are about at the moment Katie- it may not be down to Gadget at all.

I've got loads of bites which were the result of going out for a walk last Friday evening near Strines. We both got covered in bites, most of which didn't start itching for me until Monday. It's midgy season as well as flea season, so if there are other reasons to think that you're getting bitten please don't just assume that it's fleas.

(yes, you need to have Gadget covered for fleas anyway- but my house has no fleas and I know it because every animal who ever comes in is treated for them before any passengers could make their home in my carpets- the bites are from outdoors).

you can buy flea treatment (forgot what its called ........ I use it ....... available only from the vet .... back of the neck jobbo ... its so fustrating when i cant remember!!!! ) ...... anyway, Ive noticed its now for sale in my chemist .... which avoids paying the £25 consoltation fee
You can also buy flea spray for carpet/soft furnishings from the pet shop

Is it frontline? or Spoton?

Thanks guys.

In the last week I have been to Graves Park, Black Bank & Norfolk Heritage Park so that could be it.

The thing that bothers me is 3 of the bites are right on my bikini-line! :o And appeared on different days.

I've booked him into the vet this pm anyway so that at least we can rule that out :)

Max doesn't scratch but he does bite at himself which after I'd ruled out his anal glands I remembered that he had been playing with a little scruffy dog that I'm sure is infested..
Max has frontline but suspect the last lot might not of been as effective as the day I put it on he did go for a swim in the local river. I also use a good household flea spray that I tend to use at least once a fortnight particularily in the summer as it's better to be safe than sorry.
The vet did once warn me that a lot of the pet shop sprays aren't very good so I went for the one they recommended.

yes Katie frontline him lol mine are all frontlined , I also do the house with a good spray every few months its my nightmare to have a flea infested house, as i have had friends who lived in house with this problem. the spray in the house protects it from infestation and nothing can live or develop, i forget what its called Peststoy i think but i could be wrong.
Should i frontline Dave?

I've got three on my ankle, 5 on my back, just above my bum and one on my boob ! They all started to itch at different times, but I've put it down to midges / gnats on the allotment. I was there on Monday evening.

Interestingly we used to get eaten at work around this time of year and had to have the area treated, but now I have cats and the allotment, I can't tell if they are from home, work or the lottie

Should i frontline Dave?Haha funny you should say that - cos when we were at the vet's reception desk I said "can I have some frontline for him" and pointed to Gadget but Matt was stood next to him and the receptionists thought I was talking about Matt and we all had a giggle!

I think Medusa was right and I have just been eaten by midges... the vet couldn't find any fleas on Gadget at all, and like I said, he hasn't been scratching.

But to be doubly safe we've bought all the de-flea-ing products (frontline and indorex for the house) just to make sure - the household spray lasts for a whole year so it sounded like a good idea to get it regardless ;)

So don't worry Tina, Gadget won't be giving Dave anything but kisses!

Poor Rubydazzler is infested

I'd just like to make it clear that I'm not actually flea infested MYSELF, just one of my carpets... :D

And to set the record straight, there was an animal involved, at some point. AFAIK, fleas don't just walk in and set up camp ... there has to be a furry vector of some sort ... :)

I intend to up the ante tomorrow, flea bombs have been ordered ... and blimey, they're damned expensive but probably no more so than the sprays and powders.

Agreed on the animal part, techinically, but they don't have to be furry! :hihi:

My old flat got a flea problem once, and the only furries we had were gerbils. I'd been to visit a friend's new kitten though, and they hitched a ride home with me.

(And for the record, if anyone suggests putting flea spray in your hoover bag to kill any sucked up... don't do it. Surprisingly, it's quite flammable :help:)

Flea spray may be flammable, but a flea collar does the job admirably :)

theres a good one called strong hold it works for fleas, ticks and I think it might help prevent worms too

Stronghold is now out of favour with many vets (although I'm not exactly sure why) and if you're recommended one by a vet it's more likely to be called Advocate. This treats fleas, ticks and ear mites, but doesn't work on worms.

thats it ear mites dont know why I thought worms:loopy:

I think because its more expensive than frontline but my vets told me it was worth the extra if you walk your dog in long grass or near the country near places where sheep have been.
