View Full Version : Sheffield homes what a waste of time
bobgirlsnake 24-06-2008, 15:01 I have just come home to find my newly renovated lawn being destroyed by scaffolders erecting scaffold so Keir can carry out repairs that have all ready been carried out my son now can't play in the garden(and is screaming like mad) and i can't open my windows as the scaffold is in the way
i rang up council and was told by the supervisor theres nothing he can do hes already paid for the scaffold so he ain't telling them to take it down before its put up. he also said no one would be using the scaffold for over 24hrs as he needs to obtain a h&s certificate before his staff are allowed any where near it, what about me!! i need to walk under it to get out of the house wheres the H&S inspection for me??
this is abut the 30th time duplicate repairs have been booked for my address since i moved in 2years ago how often dose it happen they must be wasting £100,000's of the councils budget

yes its going to be over 24hrs untill someone can come out to see if its safe to be used, untill then me, my partner and the kids can not go out as we dont feel safe walking under it!!
bobgirlsnake 24-06-2008, 16:55 update i re contacted Sheffield homes and told them as i cant open my window and my house is getting very hot i want it taking down tonight, i was told this was impossible i told them nothing is impossible and told them if it isn't down tonight i will take it down my self(i know what i am doing before anyone says anything) and let the scrap man have it in the morning as hes always on my road and he would wet him self is offerd all that scaffolding. i was again told it was impossible for it to be done.
are Sheffield council staff that thick they dont under stand blackmail??
I think you are being unreasonable.....you are obviously getting in the way of their master plan......stop being an awkward tenant :hihi:
Seriously though they aren't bothered who they inconvenience.
My neighbours loo was incorrectly fitted during the refurb and as a result it broke on the Friday of a bank holiday weekend....did the council come out to mend it......no they did not.....mainly because it was the contractors fault :loopy:
Their remedy was to drop off a chemical toilet - more like a large potty with a seat on it. And then came the bombshell....she was told not to use it as there would be no-one to empty it until the following Tuesday :loopy::loopy:
Of course she and her family were most welcome to use mine but her son is a bit anal about these things and didn't go to the loo for four days!!!!!
It beggars belief doesn't it.
Sheffield Homes - Incompetence at it's Best
There's all sorts of these stories going around but it doesn't seem to stop happening does it. :(
I once spoke to someone who'd had scaffolding put up on their block of flats for the past 3 months but no work had been started. The council are a paying out a hiring fee each day for the scaffold to be there so while the scaffolding company is rubbing it's hands together daily there are decent rent-paying folks being told 'Sorry you can't have new central heating boiler, new kitchen or new bathroom yet as we've run out of money.....again!'
Makes ya sick!
e barker 24-06-2008, 18:03 So what happens if there is a fire and you can't get to the doors, and the windows won't open enough for you to escape?

i said this to the supervisor @ Keir and was told he would need conformation by the H&S inspector (due any time in the next 24hrs)
as for the other post about modernisation work my extractor fans fell out of the wall leaving BIG gaping holes in my kitchen and bathroom i stuffed the holes with towels and plastic bags and phoned council
i was told it was a job for keepmote to do and i had to fone them my self i booked in the repaire 2yrs ago and still waiting for someone to turn up
the council refuse to do it as its not there problem and keepmote say the 2yr warranty on the work is over so i have to live with big holes in my walls for the foreseeable future even though both of my children are asthmatic and my partner is regested disabled due to chronic asthma.
I have threatened them with legal action and contacted parlament so many times i just cant find anyone to take on my case as no one wants to sue the government
My friend told me she had 3 lots of windows arrive for her council refurb - the first 2 lots were the wrong size! Anotherr friend had loads of problems resulting from poor workmanship. What is going on? How much money has been and is continuing to be wasted? I think it's time an investigation took place into the amount of money that has been wasted.

There is a colossal amount of money wasted....even on here (Winn Estate) kitchen cabinets of the wrong size were delivered and then dumped and taken away by the scrap men (at least that's what they think :hihi:)
I opted not to have the kitchen done but seeing as there was wastage of worktop offcuts for every kitchen I asked if I could have some to refurb mine....I was told no (at least that's what they said :hihi:)
And of course they are not fussed about what they waste because they don't pay for it

Funnilly enough, when my father's new windows were installed, at his old house, about 7 years ago, he had the contractors coming back, three times to re-do their oroiginal botch- job...
First time, they snapped the frame, as it was too big, and they'd tried to squeeze the too-large window, into the opening.
That was taken out, and another window frame was installed.
Strangely, this window frame was too small for the orifice. It was supported by 3" of slates and other packing, for six or eight weeks until a third window was brought and installled. This time, the window did actually fit (ish)
I said "I said good God! What a saga! Who made the window frames? Goldilocks and the three bears?" with their 'too big', 'too small', 'just right'?"
I could add my very long story about Kier to this thread but I wouldn't want to bore you all with the 16 week saga, no forget saga, - FARSE of the two pieces of wood and the new cupboard door. The are just a bunch of cowboys who aint got a clue what they are doing.
Some more "satisfied customers".

no offence but I take exception to that. I work for Kier myself and it is like any other company on the face of this planet, you get good and bad employees. Instead of automatically blaming the work force bear in mind management play more of a role in the day to day repairs than you would imagine, add to that the fact of the poor pay some departments earn due to the ridiculous bonus system that is in place.
Also keep in mind the company is a contractor to your land lord, if the land lord wont pay for the cost of a replacement part or item for your property your gripe lies with your land lord not the company.
I find it grosly unfair to make a sweeping statement that all employees are cowboys.
bladesgal4ev 24-06-2008, 23:28 we also got dodgy kitchen cabinets! and when we mentioned them to the work men there reply was that they was built by disabled people even so if it is true they weren't disabled people fitting them!
and as for the plumbers fitting our bathroom they poured sumat down the toilet causeing it to block and over flow wich then leaked thru to the kitchen that had bare light fittings and wires totally ruining our carpets after speaking to the site manager she said she would send a carpet cleaner round a year on n still no response got new carpets now but still not the point!
got a big hole leading from the kitchen to the liveing room where they decided to put a radiaor in even tho we allready av 1 in the kitchen now got 2 inspector came told all tis cock and bull that he would fill it and pay for the roll of wallpaper still waiting
dodgy light fitting in bathroom inspector came told us it was dodgy wireing will get it fixed for u still waiting
4 out of the 5 windows wa cracked now they got replaced after the glass accidently fell out can go on but it's a waste of time even reporting it to the inspector.
I was going to quote DIVA but a few others are complaining of the windows too.
When I had a flat before moving (I'll not go into it, but I now have a lot of contempt for the police, and feel sorry for a certain person who got stabbed by a person whom I'd reported for attacking and trying to stab me), they installed new windows, of which two were already broken. The contractors said don't worry, well replace them tomorrow. I said just leave it till you have proper windows. They explained they would get paid twice for fitting them and sorted me out a few beers, which was enough for me to let it slip.
Anyhow, they didn't do it for weeks, until I tracked them further down on the estate and told them what for.
The kid next door to me had to go a night without windows as they had ordered and reordered the wrong size windows.
Maybe the council only accept people whom fail a CRB check?
Do I really want another council place?
I'm not so sure now.
Hmmm, not too sure about private landlords neither.
Ms Macbeth 25-06-2008, 06:05 To the OP, to make sure your complaint gets noted, contact Sheffield Homes here: http://www.sheffieldhomes.org.uk/sys_upl/templates/PT_AZServices/PT_AZServices_details.asp?ServiceID=1022&pgid=73504&tid=152 (Don't forget to put your address in the email.)
It will get logged, and followed up, whereas phone calls may not be recorded, although they should be!

Yes you are right, it was unfair - I apologise. I don't know what YOUR work is like, I can only comment on the fiasco I had for 16 weeks of visits from an inspector, supervisor, numerous telephone calls, visits from 3 different 'joiners' and lots of lies and excuses.
So - let me rephrase that - the 'joiners' they sent to make me a cupboard door out of a piece of wood were cowboys. The last one they sent came twice cause the first job he did was a joke - so I complained and he got sent back 2 weeks later to re-do the job.
This was only the latest incident - I could write a book (but it would be a bit repetitive) on the service we've received over the last year or so. Maybe we have just been unlucky with the workmen we have been sent, along with everyone else on here having a go.
