Why do the papers and tv keep going on about the new Blackburn manager Paul Ince being the first black Premiership manager?

Surely it was Jean Tigana at Fulham?

Everyone else is wrong, but so are you. The first black Premiership manager was Ruud Gullit. :P

Oh aye, good shout. So Ince isn't 1st or 2nd, he's actually 3rd!

Maybe the media do not class Tiguana/Gullit in the same way they class Ince- meaning that these first two were european managers and their origin being french/dutch- i think Ince is being labelled 'first black premiership manager' because he is from these shores and origin may be Jamaica/carribean(??).

Should not make a difference what colour you are- its HOW you are that counts.

The press aren't harping on about Ince as 1st black prem manager, they are stating the fact that he is the first black ENGLISH prem manager
What colour has to do with it i dont know,if he is good enough then it doesnt matter if he is black, white or green with pink spots

You're quite right, but it is significant precisely because it's never happened before. It was always possible to argue, until now, that any (English) black manager would be denied a chance in the Premiership merely because of his colour. After all, with the number of black footballers, and the number of footballers who go on to become managers, it's slightly surprising that it's taken this long.

It's a sign of progress when the first person of a specific skin-colour gets appointed to a position. It's a sign of more progress when - as you suggest - nobody even notices what skin colour the new manager is, or bothers to mention it when they do.
