Why is it bald men nearly always grow a beard? Is it to show the world how (macho)they are.

Basically once a man passes a ...certain age, gravity pulls the hair on his head downwards so it comes out of his nose, ears and chin.

They arent really bald, they just had a sort of... landslide... but with hair...

It depends on the person, doesn't it? Some people look pretty good without hair on their heads, or their faces. Like, say, Patrick Stewart. For most people, sporting no hair at all looks a little creepy, so if the hair on the top of their heads falls out, they experiment with some facial hair. Give them a break!

What's wrong with bald men having beards - my husband is balding but has had a beard for years - why does he need to shave it off now - he looks good - if you don't like it then don't look at them....................

My father is bald, and has luxuriant beardage, as does my ex husband.

I think it's to do with the strong male hormones' effect on hair and hair growth.
the hair lost in MPB (male pattern baldness) is affected adversely by the testosterone, and is therefore lost, but beardage-hair flourishes under the influence of the hormones, and therefore grows stronger.

My father always grumbles.. "I can grow hair anywhere except my head!!"

I don't mind bald blokes, and I certainly don't mind blokes with some beardage. What I really dislike seeing is the balding blokes like my brother in law, who used to cultivate the "Riff-raff" (from Rocky Horror Picture Show) look, with long, long, (greasy) "straggly-hair and-bald-spot" combination :gag:

Personally I think it's so we don't end up looking like Minime or Duncan Goodhuw - that look doesn't suit me.

Or that bloke out of Right Said Fred :D

Or even worse, the original presenter of Crystal Maze, Richard O' Brien! :gag: Even that Tudor-Pole bloke was less annoying.

Eh?

Richard O'Brien is a National Treasure!

I remember when he used to break out his harmonica and play a tune at the most critical moments of the show :D

And he was ALWAYS very polite to his Aunty :)

I wouldn't have a problem with my BF growing a beard, but I might plait his eyebrows and ear hairs into it while he was asleep!

I don't think that I've seen more bald blokes with beards than blokes with a full head of hair- does it really matter either way?

"Luxuriant beardage"

Any lady who can come up with a phrase such as that deserves me as a husband.

Theres a guy oppostie me at work who is very bald and very clean shaven. Really nice guy but I cant help thinking to myself "elmer fudd".

Having said that I guess it would be boring if we all looked the same.

Why do they grow a beard?

Some say it may be to hide something they don't like.

Usually a goatee beard does the trick ;-)

I have always experimented with a bit of facial fluff hither and thither. It just so happens that my head hair is disappearing and I just keep on experimenting. I think it's more noticeable now as people think I'm compensating or something whereas It's just that I'm simply lazy and hate shaving.

Being / going bald for some men is a truly horrific experience. Makes a lot of men feel utterly ugly and gives a huge dent in their pride. They're 'exposed'

Growing a beard may hide this in their minds. They are less exposed, safer and feel a little more attractive.
Just an opinion, but I expect it's the truth.
