View Full Version : PC - Registry Errors
Yodameister 13-04-2005, 10:41 Hi,
I get a fairly regular pop up telling me that something ahs detected problems on my registry, and indicates that I should visit a website to download some sort of scanning tool.
1. Is this sound advice
2. What is it that has detected these errors, is it something on my system or could it be spyware or something similar?
x_LoUiSe_x 13-04-2005, 10:43 DONT DO WHAT IT SAYS!
i got that once when some spyware had got onto my computer. and when i stupidly followed the link and downloaded some "antispyware" it just put more and more onto my computer!
Yodameister 13-04-2005, 10:48 Yes I am fairly sure its spyware, and had very little intention of blindly following the instructions!
Thing is though I have adaware, spybot and spyware blaster so I'm wondering what it is that's slipped through the net, and what else I need to stop it

Ignore the advice and instead visit the website of a reputable anti spyware vendor.
I recommend adaware (http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5) (that's a link to download.com to download it.
and the microsoft antispyware (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=321cd7a2-6a57-4c57-a8bd-dbf62eda9671&displaylang=en&Hash=V7KX6M8) beta.

To remove trojans, dialers, malware, etc and virus follow these instructions.
1) restart in safe mode
2) run spybot after updates (free software see www.download.com)
3) run adaware after definition updates (free software see www.download.com)
4) run spyware blaster after updates (free software see www.download.com)
5) run avg free after updates (free software see www.grisoft.com)
6) if these don't work chances are you have coolwwwsearch (very nasty) run cwshredder (free software see www.download.com)
7) restart in normal mode
8) If all this fails (and it shouldn't) let me know www.computerhell.co.uk
this was suggested in anuther thread, seems good advice to me

I've got adaware, I'd heard of the Microsoft one, but seemed to have trouble locating a site to download it from, will give it a try.

i've given you a link, it doesn't get easier than that.
you could also google microsoft antispyware and i believe it's the first hit that google returns.

Yes I meant I had struggled before you had provided me with this link. Thank you.
I had googoled a lot of combinations.
Okay, on the subject of anti spyware. If I have Adaware, Spybot, spyware blaster and microsoft thingy is that not overkill?
Are any of those 4 pointless in the presence of the others? for example I've heard it said that Spybot is not as good as it used to be due to lack of updates.
the first 3 all run only when you execute them. They all have slightly different databases, so it's possible one will pick up something the others haven't.
The microsoft one is slightly more like av software, in that it stays running and monitors activity for spyware like behaviour in addition to being able to do a full scan.
Personally, I just have the 2 (adaware and ms) and I fell that my systems are secure. I've also found on my parents pc that the ms one immediately picked up something that adaware had missed, and that it warned me about the remote control software installed on my machines (although not the ms remote desktop, cheeky).
If you want to get rid of them for space reasons then you probably can, but if they aren't hurting you they'll make a good backup in case you ever get suspicous about having missed a bit of malware.

Spybot's "Teatimer" can also be set to run in the background which alerts you to "possible dangerous registry changes" etc.
Also, the M$ one doesn't (apparently) do anything to M$pyware, and it's tied to HexPee - which I have no intentions of buying or ever using.
micro$oft might want all your money and the digital rights to your children and wife, but i've not noticed them loading people down with spyware. XP is by far the best OS they've ever produced, and if you're already using an alternative like linux then you've very little to worry about in the spyware realm.
Yodameister 13-04-2005, 13:21 Back to the rigistry thing.
If there*was* a problem with my registry what sort of thing might it be?
I guess that is a pretty vague question, but are there any common problems?
Don't worry about your registry, the pop-up was a con, spam, nothing more, nothing less. You've no need to worry about it.
Chances are, most of us have got knackered registries because Windows is in charge of keeping them in tip top condition.
It's a bit like someone coming to your door and saying "your car isn't in showroom condition, give us the keys and I'll go and sort it out for you", and you saying "OK then" and not seeing your car again.
Con, don't worry about it.
as Lurch said, there's probably nothing wrong with your registry.

Yes I quite agree, I was just curious.
I will give the microsoft anti spyware thing a go when I get home from work and see if that picks up whatever it is.
