View Full Version : Meteorite over Sheffield
As I walked out the door of the house tonight, I turned round as I saw something out of the corner of my eye, it was venus ;) Quite bright really.... so why is this thread called Meteorites then? well as I was turning away to carry on walking again something else caught my eye! :D
It was a huge meteorite slowly passing across the sky :D It was rather weird because it must have just literally skimmed over the surface of the atmosphere because not only did it take its time, but it had a huge thick trail as well, as the fact you could see the white hot "ball" upfront. I wish i'd have got a camera to hand because it was an amazing sight!
I must be really lucky with stuff like this, ive already seen such amazements as a meteor shower (with two meteorites crossing!) as well as a few comets (hale-bopp and another ive forgotton)
Anyone else encountered something similar to this? (or even saw this one tonight by pure chance!)
(around 7:55pm going from West to East)
HappyShopper 10-10-2003, 20:55 Yeah I saw that tonight (about 8.05pm), but it was going east to west. This just goes to prove the theory that it's all done with mirrors!
:loopy:
alchresearch 10-10-2003, 20:59 I believe we are just coming into the 'Leonids' meteor shower this next couple of weeks.
Excellent time to watch the skies then! :D
to put it in perspective, your average meteorite looks like a white fleck in the sky, this was about 10-15X bigger than that :o
RPG i'm glad you know whats in the nights sky at this time of year..number of times we get calls saying we say saw something weird in the night sky..Cuts down the number of UFO sightings

Im knowledgeable enough know UFOs wont come here ;)
theres not been a proper sighting since the 70's has there? (somewhere over near Gleadless Townend?)
I bet you've had a faire few calls of late with all the explosions and the air traffic of late!
couple of the best things ive seen with the telescope has been:
unusual moon, hale-bopp, Jupiter (with moons and spot), saturn (with rings and moons), mars (and snickers  ) and some other stuff
1998 was the last time we had heard of anything over Sheffield that could be classed as a UFO (UFO cos we didn't know what it was not cos it was flown by aliens....still need the proof to believe in Aliens , like landing on Geoffs front garden)

The Howden Moor (http://www.mysterymag.com/current/html/the_howden_moor_incident.html) Incident still chills me to the bone.

The Howden Moor (http://www.mysterymag.com/current/html/the_howden_moor_incident.html) Incident still chills me to the bone. I believe the plane is still visable, well the wreckage that is, though i venture up there often i never actually go deep into the moor to have a look.
Walkings not my strong point, i usually pass through on the road on my bike.

That must be a different incident? I read the article (very interesting BTW) and it said no wreckage was every found.
Where is the wreckage you are talking about Cycleracer, I ask because I want to go and do some night time photography this w/e end that would be an interesting subject.
upholder 11-10-2003, 14:30 Peak District Air Crashes (http://www.peakdistrictaircrashes.co.uk/) may be of use.
It gives a list of known crash sites in the Peak District going back to 1918.
billyblade 11-10-2003, 15:38 Whilst we are on the thread about UFOs etc. I once owned a book which was written by the landlord of a pub in or near matlock relating to all sorts of strange goings on with strange beings etc. (probably the locals :D ) lent it to my sister and never seen it again. Any ideas as I cant remember title or author.

There is some wreckage on the top of Howden Moor, although it is not a UFO. It is the remains of a Stirling bomber which came down in c1943. It was a on a training exercise - they were lost, thought they were over Lincolnshire and were surprised to see a big hill comign at them! Everyone walked away to tell the tale.

Cheers, I went and took some pictures of this crash (http://www.peakdistrictaircrashes.co.uk/1939-194542-52003.htm) which occured almost exactly 59 years ago. I am actually planning a whole project of night time photography of these, although it's pretty scary being out in the Peaks alone, so I may chicken out.
I remember hearing about the Howden Moor thing. I'll have to go up there one day and check it out.
I didn't see the meteorite the other night but I saw one this time last year. Maybe It's a seasonal thing!!
Phanerothyme 14-10-2003, 16:22 rpg, did your meteorite look anything like this (http://www.skunkulike.co.uk/ahi/fireball_burnett.jpg)?

nah, didnt look like that as it was night time ;)
it was quite slow for a metorite really, but still faster than say a firework or a plane
id say if it was a good 50x the lengh of the ball in comparason
i'll do a drawing....

WallBuilder 04-03-2006, 17:30 One of my g/f's was really interested in watching the sky and at an annual meteor shower I joined her in the garden.
Saw loads of them but the most impressive sight was of a fairly clear and distinct one with a visible tail that exploded into several smaller one's . My g/f who was swigging hot chocolate at the wrong moment wouldn't believe me till she saw it being reported by other sky watchers the following day.
firecracker 05-03-2006, 15:39 So it wasn't Wednesday's forwards practising their finishing skills after all.:o :D
BILLYBLADE, was that book called 'dark peak aircraft wrecks' by ron collier as i have a copy, it's an excellent read-very informative.
regards,john.
What counts for a "proper sighting" as my brother saw something about 5 yrs ago.

I knew it was out there but thought it was closer to the Snake than the Grousse.
