View Full Version : What Zoom lens on a budget
Hi, Im new to digital photography and after checking out a few different makes I decided on the older Nikon D50, I have taken shome good shots with this but now really want a decent zoom lens, again looking at the prices and different models out there is bewildering, can anyone suggest a decent lens without breaking the bank
Example of an impromptu pic of my son http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3125/2600675248_ab450e4673_o.jpg Zoom in to see the quality, this was taken with the bog standard lens and brightened with photoshop.
How much is your budget ?
I was thinking second hand as the new ones are far too expensive (unless you want a really nasty one that doenst work well in bad light and so on) missed a decent one n ebay last night which went for £66 plus P&P Nikon Nikkor 70-300mm F4.0-5.6 D-AF ED Lens (good buy or bad buy?) I've tried to read reviews, I thought about £70-£80 wouldnt be too far wrong for a mediocre lens.

ah, you have just missed one good opportunity to own this lens at a good bargain! I had this second hand from ebay about a year back at £90 which was also a bargain. This is a better built lens compared to the newer G version which use plastic construction, not to mentioned it also come with ED glass which controls lens flare better. I am satisfied with the performance of this lens so far being used for several occasion and never failed me. Here are some photos taken with this lens:

(if I have remembered correctly, all were taken at 300mm)
Hope this help.
Eric_Collins 23-06-2008, 16:27 I picked up a Tamron 28-200mm film lens but it says on Tamron site on a DSLR it then turns into a 50-300mm. I only paid £33 for that with an old film camera.

I got this from the Film 35mm section rather than the Digital section on eBay.
Thanks for the advice, it is difficult to know what to look for though, as in what lens will fit my camera, will the auto focus work or not, what is the minimum I should be looking out for?

Eric_Collins 23-06-2008, 17:29 without the lens model it maybe tricky, but looking on the table i found , there is a good chance it may work.
Yes I agree, I have mailed the seller but no reply at the moment, if it did fit it would be a bargain as a 1st zoom lense, I could donate the camera to an enthusiast too!

That's what i did with my spare canon body. I think a lot of people forget that old Film SLR's are compatible with New Digital SLR's .
I noticed a fantastic difference going from a 55mm to 200mm:o The only downside to a waking lens is the camera bag is a bit tight :hihi:
proofreader 28-06-2008, 12:56 Does anyone know where I could find a chart showing what 35mm SLR lenses are compatible with a Canon EOS 350D? All help would be much appreciated, thanks.
