View Full Version : Did The Internet Kill CB And HAM?

Back in the ninetys I owned a radio scanner.

I used to listen to CB and HAM radio enthusiasts on it and some of the chats that went on were very amusing.

I remember a bloke who lived in Norfolk park flats who was called Lol (Laurence) who used to get into some very interesting subjects and I used to love listening to his ramblings and found out later that he had quite a following.

Then, in around 1999, I heared him start a subject about something called "Windows"...

Very soon, everyone was- or seemed to be discussing this "Windows 98" thing and I discovered that Windows was something to do with computers.

One by one, the radio enthusiasts started to vanish from the airwaves and the few that remained bemoaned the fact that the internet had taken everyone away from their radios...

By 2000 it became difficult to find any CB or HAM radio chats on my little scanner, and by the start of 2001, when I first logged onto the net for the first time, I assumed that they were all here, online, typing instead of radioing.

DID the net kill the CB and HAM star? Are there any left?

I remember people bragging that they managed to get a conversation started with someone in France, because there was a "Lift on" and their radio signals were able to travel further and one man even said he got a mesage from America once.

Now, of course, its easy to chat to anyone in the world with no fuss, all we need to do is boot up the comp, log on and type away.

They were the days...............
The internet came long after cb's had died a death. The death of them came as many things in this country, goverment provoked er i mean legalised, wattage down rated to i think a mere 4 watt and useless. You can tell the useless ones, they say UK on them.
Good days though.
Roger.......over and out!!!

My great-uncle was one of Kilmarnock's radio people; I remember his house having a massive aerial strapped to the side and a room full of antique electronics. He also had a pointable satellite dish and a TV the size of Manhattan.

I'm sad that that era has passed; back then you had to have at least an inkling of how it all worked to use it, whereas now any fool can log into MSN and type "brb k".

I thought you always claimed you were only forty something?? :hihi:

I think CB went long before t'internet came along. I can remember a mate of my dad saying he was going to have give up CB 'cos of rules and regs, and that was back when I was in my 20s :hihi:

I think I may know the Lol that you're referring to. My Uncle and my Grandad (who have both sadly now died of cancer) were both into their CB's and HAM too. They were both friends with Lol and I'm fairly certain he was from Norfolk Park!

I dabbled around in the Mid 90's too!! Used to be a member of a CB club. I forgot exactly what it was called but it had the initials KB, which stood for Kelham Breakers or something!!

Good days!

Oh and actually on the topic of the thread; I do think that it was a big nail in it's coffin. I remember my first communication over the internet was chat over CB radio. i can't remember what it was called, but basically instead of talking in the mic, you typed on the PC and this was converted and sent over the CB airwaves.

As far as I can remember Lol used to live on the top floor of one of the tower blocks, and I remember listening to a lot of banter between him and his friends.

Im sure he mentioned Norfolk park and come to think of it... Im sure he mentioned moving either to or from there...

There were a few idiots, yeah, unlicenced people on both HAM and CB breaking in to conversations and Mike-keying and swearing and what have you.

I cant remember who else he talked to apart from a lady who lived in or near Walkley who had a daughter and... hamsters...

I wish I could hear them all again, it was a case of listening and not really taking much in and I now with Id paid more attention.

God knows why but I remember this lady with a hamster... I was a pervert back then though so... I suppose its natural for me to fixate on them :D

Im sure he talked to someone from Rotherham too but I cant remember his name- I DO remember laughing at them though. They were better than a radio comedy!
