i got two kittens a few days ago, they have been lovely settled really well very friendly even with my 1yr old when he is pulling them about.

they are brother and sister since we have had them they have been playing nicely as you would expect but tonight they keep fighting, its not play fighting as they are hissing, making there tails fluff up and arching there backs. i keep splitting them up and putting the girl on my knee (she is the one been attacked) but the male keeps jumping on my knee to bite her. i have now put the boy in the travel cage to give him "time out".

is there any reason why they would be doing this?? if they were from two different litters i would understand it.:confused::confused:

mine used to do this when they were younger. Neither of them got hurt (although we had the occasional yelp when one went too far) I assumed they were either just playing, or fighting for the alpha male status. Anyway, they soon settled down with no sign of any injuries. They still do it occasionally now too. I still figure it's just a bit of violent play.

From what I know about cats you have to let them fight it out. They are establishing who is "top cat" and they will keep on until it is sorted. As long as they don't actually wound each other they will be fine. Mine are mother and son and they started this soon after he stopped feeding from her. Now they have sorted out that he is in charge things have settled down and everyone is happy again.

My cats did this. Unless they are really getting hurt them let them fight it out because more often than not they are playing ;)

Kitties do that. Don't worry, they won't do it when they are big enough to go out.

Unless you're finding odd ears on the carpet in the morning- it's a game.

Just a thought but if you have a boy and a girl, how old are they and have they been 'done'? Other than that mine have always fought to see who's top cat. They still do it now seeing as one in particular won't back down . Just leave them to it and keep an eye on them.

there only 12weeks old so cant get them "done" yet, the vet said to keep an eye on them, and if they start trying to mate then they can be "done" sooner.

thanks for all in help, they seem fine today they must have just been playing but when you hear them hissing etc you get a little worried

Hissing is a perfectly normal part of cat conversation, as is lots of body language including fluffing up, swishing tails and ears all over the place.

The only feline language about which they are usually serious is spitting and some growling. Everything else is either a game or a non-violent way of sorting out their pecking order.

I agree with Medusa, when you have more than one cat you hear and see a lot more cat behaviour than you ever will with a solitary cat...which I think just adds to the fascination, I love watching my cats interact and we never ever had a proper fight yet, cats can be suprisingly sociable.

So you can imagine what a heap of fun it is in our house with 8 to contend with and all lively breeds - now we've got 2 bengals there's never a dull moment, especially as girl bengal keeps stalking boy bengal and hasn't forgiven hum yet for giving her an nasty abcess on her forehead... Other than that though, our lot generally get along fine- the ocasional spat to get the prime position on a knee, a cupboard or a bed, but nothing to worry about. Hours of fun, having more than one feline...

Oh, stop it, do! I laughed so much when I read that, that I woke up new dog, who gave me an unbelievable filthy look before sinking back down again for his afternoon nap! :hihi:
