View Full Version : Baby violently sick for past week. Help!
Hiya. My LO is 7 months and been on solids since he was 4 months.
He's always been quite a sicky baby but now it's really bad. Since Monday he's been sick once a day but loads. It's usually afetr a meal. For example today he's had breakfast at 8am (cereal) then a 6oz bottle about a hour later.
At 1.30pm he had a meal and dessert. At 330pm he had a 6oz bottle. Then at 6pm he had a meal and yoghurt. Then at 730pm we attempted to give him a bottle but he started to heave and threw up what seemed like the whole days food. It covered us and him. Before he was sick he screamed really high pitched like he was in pain and he's been doing this since monday. I have a appointment at the GP on Monday at 840am.
Me and my other half are really concerned and today we've both been really upset.
I've tried to elliminate things e.g. lumpy food, dairy but he's still being sick.
He has had a tooth appear this week but I've read that illness (like colds and sick) do not usually make an appearance with teething and it's just a myth.
Last week he had a cold and he's still a little bit chesty but he's not coughing or chocking before he's sick.
I just wondered if anybody has had any experiences with anything tlike yhis and what the diagnosis was.
Forgot to mention, he's been a little unsettled but sleeping well in the evening.
His weight gain the time before last at the HV was only a couple of oz but the time after it was 3lb. My other half thinks he is not gaining weight (it's been 4 weeks since we had him weighed.)
Anna and Jude 7 months and 2 days:help::(
SpeedDemon 21-06-2008, 19:38 Have you rang NHS direct? Their number is 0845 46 47 They may advise you to pop him along to the GP out of hours service at the Hallamshire, but worth just asking for advice, if only to set your mind at rest. If he has a chest infection, that could well be making him sick - that's been quite common in the past in our family. Good luck, hope he's soon better.
Thanks. No I haven't called NHS direct, purley because I seem to call them every week and I feel a fool. I'm thinking that they might think I'm just a neurotic mum but he has had lots of colds etc.
I don't think he has a chest infection as he's not coughing alot but when he does cough it sounds chesty.
I did take him to the Drs with the cough and he said his chest sounded fine, but I could feel his chest rattling when I held him close to me.
I think I'm gonna wait till Monday unless he gets any worse but my Drs have a knack of making you feel neurotic.
If we don't get a answer from them then we were gonna go to the childrens hospital.
Anna :)
He could have a reflux problem but you need to seek medical advice, you could pop him along to the out of hours sugery , don't leave it its possibly simple to find whats wrong and if its reflux its simple medicine and it works very quickly

If it was reflux then wouldn't it hapen aftr every meal or wouldn't it have been happening all along?

I work for several drs who always accept that you are just a caring mum
duckweed 21-06-2008, 19:47 Take the baby to the children's hospital. They are the experts after all. I wouldn't wait. Even if it turns out to be nothing at least you will have peace of mind. There are all sorts of things it could be. Why speculate? I'd rather feel a fool than feel guilty that I'd let a child get worse when I could have done something.

maybe it's just me that's paraniod, the dr's are really good where I go but it's just 1 of them that seems to look at me gone out whenever I see him.

Thank you. You don't work at WMC btw do you?
SpeedDemon 21-06-2008, 20:22 Forgot to say - if he will drink things other than milk, it's important to get plenty of fluids down him - boiled water or maybe a little juice, just to stop him dehydrating with being sick. Like everyone else says, if you're worried, take him to see a doctor. I always go by the rule of "If I'm worried, then I will see a doc for my own peace of mind, no matter what their attitude may be" I've had some docs make me feel paranoid too, but I just go with my own gut instinct and ignore their attitude. Better to be safe than sorry, and that's what they're there for. Hope he's ok. :)

If you mean woodseats medical centre no i don't work for them but have taken various children i nannied for there for various minor or major illnesses
If your ever unsure about your babies health ring the Dr (your own or out of hours) If you can't get through go to the childrens they are fab and told me last week they'd rather see your baby and send you on your way with nothing wrong than miss one who is really ill or have you fret all weekend!
You really shouldn't worry about looking like an over anxious Mum. I've called NHS direct countless times.
How is your LO? Have you phoned your Doctors or NHS Direct?
Hi, I took him to the childrens this morning. They couldn't find anything wrong and said it's a possibility he's lactose intollerant but need to see my GP. I've got a appointment at 840am tomorrow.
thanks for all your replies...really helpful.

It sounds like your baby might have a sickness bug. My little boy (14 months) has had one this week. And since being 9 months has had about 6 now. Every time he throws up huge amounts of food and every time I worry about it but every time it clears up within about a week or so. There's nothing you can do to treat it and the only real risk if it is a sickness bug is that the baby could become dehydrated so you have to make sure you give him lots of water.
This week my little boy started not being able to keep even water down so I took him to the doctors but they were happy that he was keeping enough down. He wasn't sick immediately after having the water and this is when you need to worry. The doctor told me to continue with milk if he wanted it but don't let him guzzle it. Give food if he isn't sick for 3-4 hours but give he kind of food you would eat if you had felt sick like toast, bread, plain food. If he's got a bug and you feed his as normal his stomach won't be able to cope with it. Every time my little boy has had a bug we have had to move slowly back towards him eating normal food and normal portion sizes.
Hope your little boy is ok.

Thanks alot this makes me feel much better about things.
It's awful because he's sick soooo much I'm worried about taking him anywhere.
This last week while my little boy has been ill we haven't really been out as like you say there is an awful lot of sick when they are sick and it covers a long distance! After him having many of these bugs now I would say the most important thing is to be patient. Stay in for a few days, don't feed him too much or anything too rich and see how he goes. Everytime I've got impatient and fed my little boy too much too soon or gone out he's been sick again. This week I tried really hard to progress really slowly back to normality and he got better within 5-6 days.
I was worried about the amount of times my little boy has been ill, as as well as the bugs he has also had many colds/virus type illnesses. The doctors aren't worried as he is thriving which you can tell by looking at him and they also said if there was a problem with his immune system he wouldn't fight the illnesses off. So if he's ill, better for 2weeks and then ill again that's unfortunate but his immune sytem has fought the bug.
I hope your little boy is feeling a bit better now.
honeyb35 23-06-2008, 07:44 i'd go with the advice of the others and get him checked over, but I'd be looking at reflux. Its not always present from birth, it can develop in some children later. It can also be a cause of lots of chest problems and colds.
My daughter has also had a terrible sickness & diarrhoea bug a week or so ago. It was really nasty and lasted about 8 days and I understand how you feel as we were really upset too. A gastro bug can leave babies temporarily lactose intolerant due to the irritation in the gut, so the milk can keep setting it off. We had to change to soya formula for a few days (though beware as this made her constipated ). There could be an underlying reflux issue also, or other explanations, however, it sounds like you are seeking medical advice and hopefully they will get to the bottom of it. It doesnt sound like dehydration will be an issue given that he is taking meals & fluids and holding them down for a reasonable period of time. Hope it gets better soon. Sure it will :)
