Don't blink though, I think it will be an early stoppage. AJ sheffield 21-06-2008, 10:12 PM I'll be watching. Don't blink though, I think it will be an early stoppage. Exactly, Kahn will obliterate him. pattricia 21-06-2008, 10:20 PM Amir is fighting tonight on ITV at 10.15pm if anyone is interested:cool: Yep, Ill be watching. I like this fighter.:) arachnophobe 21-06-2008, 11:01 PM I'll be watching. Don't blink though, I think it will be an early stoppage. I agree. Definitely can't see Gomez lasting beyond round 7, barring a sensation. :| Although apparently he's hired Oliver Harrison, Khan's ex-trainer, for this fight. I doubt that'll make too much difference though. arachnophobe 22-06-2008, 12:22 AM Woo-hoo won my bet on stoppage in 5th. :):):) Tarquin 22-06-2008, 12:28 AM A tough fight for Amir:suspect: arachnophobe 22-06-2008, 12:36 AM A tough fight for Amir:suspect: That's probably a good thing. He's had too many easy fights so far. pattricia 22-06-2008, 12:39 AM Woo-hoo won my bet on stoppage in 5th. :):):) How much did you win ? A nice win there !!! arachnophobe 22-06-2008, 12:49 AM Well good luck, how nice. A nice win there !!! Drinks are on me tonight- will courier round a G&T for you Patty! :hihi: mr craig 22-06-2008, 01:12 AM Future World Champion ? He'll win one of the 11ty billion world championships on offer these days. I think he'll get caught out when he fights so real world class fighters. He's still getting better and he's got a long way to go but i don't feel he's really as good as the hype warrants. tosh13 22-06-2008, 01:27 AM A good fight for Khan ,he needs to work on his close up work & learn to use his jab more to keep fighters like Gomez away, all top fighters have to learn the hardway .Ali did so let's hope Khan does not do a Nazim & ruin his career by depending on his speed of punches, as you get older you slow down. arachnophobe 22-06-2008, 01:40 AM Nas also made the mistake of thinking he didn't need to train. Can't see Amir making that error, at least not yet. Within a couple years he'll probably hold one of the "big four" belts, although unification might be a bridge too far. Especially with Manny Pacquiao going for the WBC belt next week. :suspect: mholey 22-06-2008, 02:33 AM Khan was dodgy tonight, very dodgy, and it's not the first time he's looked pretty poor against average competition. The hype train needs to slow down a bit. That being said, he has MASSIVE potential, and many great attributes. For starters he's one of the most accurate punchers I've ever seen, and I like to think I know what I'm talking about. Once a top American trainer gets his hands on Khan then he should improve a lot. The main areas which concern me are his defence and his chin, not a good combination of faults. But please, lets all remember he is young lad with only 18 fights under his belt, lets be excited, but not get too carried away. AJ sheffield 22-06-2008, 08:49 AM Khans bad defence is typical of many olympic fighters, probably due to many years of having the protection of a headguard. His chin too is a massive worry, this will become even more apparent once he stops fighting old men past their prime and starts fighting class fighters. x-GiGgLeS-x 22-06-2008, 09:08 AM I watched the fight and I loved it. I'm glad it was over soon though because i was soooo tired and wanted to go to bed but couldn't until i watched that :) mad i know but he's a good fighter and i like watching him. What can i say? Bazooka 22-06-2008, 10:40 AM I was not surpised Gomez gave Khan a hard fight- this guy (gomez) loves to try and upset the odds and usually gives 100% at a top end fight. He was beaten purely by Khans hand speed and accuracy (massive advantage he has when things are going against him). Okay he got caught, but what fighter does not? It does not make you a bad fighter overnight- great fighters like Mohammad Ali, Sugar Ray R all would get caught flash on the chins- as long as the chin is not glassy I think Khan can dominate. He has taken some good shots so far and though gone down, not out. I do look forward to seeing which trainer Khan picks- whoever it is, will be able to improve him in some areas- personally i think he needs to learn how to close fighters down when he is under pressure. happyhippo 22-06-2008, 01:22 PM It was a really good fight. Gomez did really well an took some shots, i think the only reason the fight got to the fifth round is the fact that gomez had experience and could take a beating or khan wouldve stopped him earlier. Well done to Khan, an excellent fighter, still a lot to learn though. arachnophobe 22-06-2008, 01:42 PM Gomez was probably what Khan needed for that fight- someone tough who wouldn't submit and would get him wih a few decent shots in return. So Amir gets another stoppage win but has his heart and chin tested on the way (so far so good for both). happyhippo 22-06-2008, 05:39 PM Gomez was probably what Khan needed for that fight- someone tough who wouldn't submit and would get him wih a few decent shots in return. So Amir gets another stoppage win but has his heart and chin tested on the way (so far so good for both). It was hardly a real test of his chin but that will come if he fights Campbell, Diaz, Casamayor or Katsidis. Khan can certainly fight though, of that there is no doubt. Heyesey 22-06-2008, 11:40 PM It was hardly a real test of his chin but that will come if he fights Campbell, Diaz, Casamayor or Katsidis. Fair point. It's probably helpful to get whacked on the chin by someone not quite as powerful, though, so he can get used to the idea that people can actually hit him and knock him over.:D How far away from being truly world-champion class do we think he is now? I'm far from an expert on boxing, but it seems to me he's got enough class and ability and just needs some more education and experience. AJ sheffield 22-06-2008, 11:41 PM Fair point. I'm far from an expert on boxing, but it seems to me he's got enough class and ability and just needs some more education and experience. I'd still say he's some way off. He's got plenty of ability but Gomez still bullied him around the ring and dragged Khan into his type of fight, Gomez just ran out of steam in the end. chem1st 23-06-2008, 01:08 AM Khans bad defence is typical of many olympic fighters, probably due to many years of having the protection of a headguard. It was clear Gomez could have gone another round. A real challenge will be good to see. mholey 23-06-2008, 03:04 AM I'd still say he's some way off. He's got plenty of ability but Gomez still bullied him around the ring and dragged Khan into his type of fight, Gomez just ran out of steam in the end. He didn't bully Khan at all, I don't see your point. Khan is far from Championship material. For once I feel Warren is bringing him on at a good pace, if Khan fought one of the top dogs, he would really struggle. He'll be world champ one day I'm sure, but I'd like to see at least another 3-4 fights before he goes in for a meaningful belt. A lot hinges on who he's gonna pick as a permanent trainer. Roger Mayweather would be perfect to train Khan IMO. He needs to tighten up his defence BIG TIME, and Roger Mayweather would sort his defence out brilliantly. mholey 23-06-2008, 03:05 AM I was enjoying the fight until it was stopped. It was clear Gomez could have gone another round. A real challenge will be good to see. No, I disagree, Gomez was getting hit too much, and brain damage isn't what this sport is about. Bazooka 23-06-2008, 08:59 AM No, I disagree, Gomez was getting hit too much, and brain damage isn't what this sport is about. I agree- at the end of the day, Gomez has had some tough fights and would not consider the danger he would be in when getting into his usual tear up. At 31 and slowing down, probably wise to call it a day. He also seems to try and stay clear from the usual enemy- alcohol. Seems to be a major problem for some great athletes.. what a shame. Code13 23-06-2008, 07:03 PM I think (Dublin born) Gomez may have an Irish title fight lined up. I thought the stoppage was premature on Saturday, but that Khan was very likely to win eventually.
