Hi, just bought a new Dell Inspiron 1720 (Vista Home Premium) last week and had nothing but trouble with it hope someone can help. The main problems are not being able to get windows updates. Unexpected shutdowns etc. Blue screen errors. Im trying everything i know to try and fix the probs before i ring them up. I went on the Dell site and took part in the online help where one of their technicians speaks to you via messaging and he took control of my laptop and looked at various bits of it i:e event viewer and problem reports and he said that there was definatley something wrong but couldnt figure out what. He sent me the Dell Image Restore instuctions but the first thing on that list says to go into "Advanced Boot Up Options" via F8 on the Dell start up screen and press "Repair My Computer", but that option is not on my list, the first thing on my list is Safe Mode then various other start up options , very odd i thought. The other things ive tried are unistalling and reinstalling Windows and also on the cmd prompt the sfc/scannow tool which did uncover corrupt files but was unable to repair them. Sorry if this seems a bit long winded just wondered if anybody has experienced owt like this but if all else fails ill give them a bell and try and get a replacement or repair, it is under warranty. I'm using my desktop at the minute.
I'd send it back, you paid for a new & working product, not a project (although anything with Vista on is a project for anyone using it but anyway.....).
The tech support guy has said something is wrong but he can;t fix it, you've discovered corrupt files. I think that's enough to warrant a return to Dell, I'd certainly be boxing it up instantly.

Yeah think your right, ive just finished installing trhe drivers back on it as we speak and it was just like i tried it the first time. Its goin back!!! Give me XP anyday why bring another OS out when XP was great, well i know why but i think they should give you an option of the two lastest OS's when you buy new PC's. Its always a good idea when getting both hardware and software to not go for the latest releases because of driver issues compatability issues etc.
Thanks anyway Lurch for the reply.
Vista is excellent in my opinion, but so is XP. Vista's recently published Service Pack 1 sorted many of the problems out.
As for the Dell, yeah.. get it straight back to them!
