View Full Version : What's on your "must do" list when you visit Sheffield
Visiting Sheffield in a few weeks, I try to get back once every couple of years and wondered what others do when they return, maybe get some new ideas.
I have my usual list, have to visit family, friends. The must eat list, real bacon Sandwich, pork pie, cheese and onion crisps, fish and chips a curry. Then of course there is the pubs, are they still there, still the same and decent beer. A trip into the Peak district a walk and of course back to the pub.
So did I miss anything out?

Hi,
I came back from Sheffield June 2nd.
If you have been a regular visitor "over home", you will know not to try and drive downtown - that is unless you are a masochist. Park your car, take the bus or walk, if you want to see it all.
Not many changes in the suburbs apart from more cars and less parking. The big changes are in what you might call the central core. There at least 20 construction cranes working there alone. Lots of new buildings, mainly business and high-end apartments. The lower end of town ie. Fitzalan Square, Haymarket, Waingate and The Wicker are looking very shaby. The Wicker district (where I grew up) has been gutted to build all the new roads and interchanges. Fargate and the top end of town is still holding up. Work will be starting soon on the new retail quarter.
Take a look at what used to be the Peace Gardens, the Winter Gardens, the new Millenium Gallery: all very interesting. They have also done a good job reworking the museum at Western Park.
Oh yes: Regular gas was about $ 8.70 a gallon
Send me a PM if you need more info.
Regards
'Must Do' things in Sheffield ? Now, let's see ?
A tour round Sheffield's gleaming new, multi-million pound airport.
A stroll round the centre to count how many motorists are swearing or getting nicked for
parking in the wrong place.
Take the family for a nice evening out in Sheffield's vibrant city centre, buzzing on a
Saturday evening : visiting quaint inns and hostelries or have a coffee or wine at the
many pavement cafes ; watching the City's Yoof as they enjoy themselves in their frolics
and fun.
Admire the lovely new buildings, springing up all over, which, doubtless will be there in
500 years time ; the lovely call-centres and apartments filled with young, cultured,
civilised city-dwellers who will enhance The Urban Living Experience.
Visit one of the many Fast-Food outlets, specially catering for those who life in the fast
lane ! [ Treble Cheesy WhamBurgers with 500 French Fries---Only 25 p.! ].
Visit the wonderful Sheffield Central Library and borrow some DVD's, Videos or various
Audios.
Stroll through one of the many wonderful parks in the evening and meet lots of Sheffield's
Young People collecting money from you------[ for charity of course ]. Use the spotless
facilities at your leisure.
Visit the proposed Sheffield Councillors Waxwork Exhibition----see real-life models of
your favourites, past and present. Remember Sheffield Council is out there for YOU ! Nothing is too much trouble and YOUR problems are THEIR problems.

Must be better weather and better views over there though??

Not all that cut and dried, espadrille. Where I live on the Atlantic coast of Canada we've had rain through much of May and June, not much sign of summer yet. My daughter lives near Pickering which is where Janet lives and it hasn't been all that great there either. As for the "better views," yes it's very scenic on Prince Edward Island, many other parts of Canada also, but then Derbyshire and the Yorkshire Dales are hard to beat also. Neither are far from Sheffield. But, there's no shangri-la. ;)
Jabberwocky 23-06-2008, 12:45 First thing I do when I get there is buy a fishcake and stuff that into me. The second thing I do is buy lots of bottles of Hendersons Relish, THEN I go about the rest of my business.
Janet Alexa 23-06-2008, 14:48 you got that right rogG! just last week we had a hail storm, haven't got a flower left in my garden, the size of marbles! but ditto on the magnificent scenary in Derbyshire, my eyes just fill up with tears when I see that "take your breath away" countryside...nothing finer! not in Pickering, or Ontario and most part of Canada for that matter!
I haven't been back for a couple of years, but I would go to see my brother and my friend of some years, then it would be Tinsley Park cemetery to put some flowers on my parents and grandparents graves.
Eat lots of my sisters meat & potato pie...then fish & chip shop, to take the taste off...........Just Kiddin Sis :hihi:

I only come up to Sheffield maybe once a year to visit friends....i too stock up on Hedersons and get a proper fishcake butty!:D...........here in Norfolk they've never heard of them,a fishcake ere is a rissole :loopy:
Calling a fishcake, a rissole ? Whatever next ! People often call us 'Yorkshire Puddings' [ Can't think why ? ] but people who call fishcakes ' rissoles ' should obviously be called ' Rissoles ' ......or something like that ?
I'd avoid visiting Sheffield in the fist place.
A gentle stroll around Hillsborough, land of my birth, perhaps - that's near enough to Sheffield for me.
A bottle of Henderson's Relish wouldn't go amiss though - do you know the owner's from Liverpool?

On a drunken night out, I had a hell of a row in a chippy because they gave me a rissole when I asked for a fishcake.
They insisted that theyd never heared of the word "Rissole" and that the 50p sized piece of crap they offered me WAS a fishcake!
I currently live in a place were everyone wears shorts all the time in the summer even to go to the bar and eat, I have maybe wore a pair of long trousers twice in the last month.
But in preping for England I tried asking my dad what people wear out in Sheffield these days. I was sternly told he would be seen dead with me in the pub if I wore shorts (he's old school), So if anyone can enlighten me, have things changed? Do I need trousers, no jeans, collared shirt and no trainers to go downtown on the weekend. Are flip-flops in the pub allowed? or will I just get "look at that Tw*t" when I go out?

Bayern Blade 27-06-2008, 14:58 Bramall lane is always visited ( and the visit is usually regretted :( ),Grenosides pubs are all visited and much strongbow is drunk ( British lager is no longer palatable after over 24 years of the Bavarian variety).
A few good indian takeaways are a must as the German idea of "hot" is only lukewarm as far as we are concerned.
I don't usually bother with the city centre at night anymore but try and have a few drinks around town during the day once or twice with my dad and a few mates.
If possible I visit the Nelson and renew aquaintences from my old Wap and Rebs days.
Go out with family and friends, have a walk around the village (Greno),and up Greno woods.

You would freeze to death in flipflops!!Nothing but rain here!!Remember, England..June..equals water!!Wimbledon and Glastonbury!! equals water.
More likely that you would look good in just a pair of jeans and a nice top and decent trainers.Nobody cares that much, but flip flops are for holidays abroad on the beach.!!

Well, you did live in Arbourthorne!
Eater Sundae 06-07-2008, 16:06 If you remember the Botanical Gardens - with its rather dilapidated glass houses. Well, it was all tarted up a couple of years ago, including new glass corridors to connect the buildings,
Its a bit like the Winter Gardens, which are roughly where the town hall eggbox extension used to be.
Janet Alexa 06-07-2008, 16:31 ESPADRILLE: Didn't your parents teach you "if you haven't got anything nice to say then don't say anything at all?"....stay in Lincolnshire and LEAVE Sheffield for those that still enjoy it!....like me!
