View Full Version : Advice needed - constipated kittens??

I am getting a little concerned about the two kitties we brought home yesterday from CATS (Wiggy & Imbiss).
They have not yet pooped and they have been with us more than 24 hrs...

They are weeing in the litter trays, and eating BabyCat and cooked chicken (Wiggy is virtually hoovering it up), and drinking water, everything else is just great, but there is No Poo!

I am aware they may have hidden it away somewhere, but unless my eyes (and nose) deceive me they are just not doing it!

How long should we wait? Is this normal? Do we have a magical new breed of cat that doesn't poo, and are we going to be very rich?!

It is really unlikely that they are both constipated to be honest. What you have to remember is that Babycat is a really low residue food- the quantity of poo that is produced is very small compared to the amount of food that goes in the top end.

It's not uncommon for cats or kittens to withhold pooing (or weeing) if they aren't feeling very comfortable or are in a new situation- they can go more than 24 hours without weeing and double that time without pooing.

I'd say to give it 2-3 days before taking to the vets if everything else says happy and healthy. Bearing in mind it's the weekend, give your vet a call for reassurance in the morning if they haven't been by then.

What you will have to remember is that poos from small kittens are actually really small (even though it looks like they've just pooed half their bodyweight!) so if you've got even half an inch of litter in the tray they could have already gone and you haven't seen it in the tray.

Thanks Medusa! You've put my mind at rest... we thought also it might be a bit of disruption/stress but they are peeing quite happily in front of us (I'd forgotten how funny the cat 'toilet pose' is) and they are very settled in every other respect.
They've actually been toilet trained on newspaper so we don't have to worry about dust etc from litter... I guess I'll just get on my hands and knees again and check all the crevices to see/smell if they have chosen to go elsewhere!

I shall quell my ridiculous anxieties for a further 24 hrs...

We have had poo. What a relief (for them and me!)

They are tiring themselves out! (http://www.flickr.com/photos/beckelina/2596386480/in/photostream/)

Glad to hear it! It seems to be the final confirmation that everything's happening like it should, which is very reassuring with little ones.

They have lovely markings- hope you have a long and happy life together with them.

One of kittens did actually get constipated when he was about 7-8 months old. He was obviously in distress and had a tender stomach. Had to go to the vet for an enema:gag: I'm glad yours are ok though but you would be able to tell if they really did have a problem.
