The supermarket behemoth grows bigger by the day. Just announced that it's the first British retailer to make £2 billion profits in one year.

That's more than many country's annual GDP! Now that is a Great British success story!

Of course already many people are criticising the supermarket, with more and more lining up to have a go.

Why can we not get over our peculiar British dislike of success and celebrate?

Well done Tesco....until I moved to Sheffield in 1997 I always used Morrison's or Asda...at that time there was no Tesco in Middlesbrough at all!!

I used it when I came to Sheffield as it seemed the obvious choice....I love it.....clothes (I think) are nicer than George in Asda and just as reasonably priced!!!

The only time I don't like it is Christmas Eve!!!!!!!!!Arghhh!!!

there was a program on itv yesterday about Tesco.

How when it cuts £1 million from household items it includes champagne and hair dye, then it adds more than £1 million back onto things like tea bags and baked beans!!!

It's also fallen foul of the ASA 19 times in the last year, more than all the other supermarkets combined.

And then they did a price test in London (not the cheapest area) and found that Tesco's cost more than local shops for 9 out of 14 items (a very small study I know).

Tesco's own brand stuff, with the stripes, is very cheap, but it's also very very low quality compared to the own brand stuff from other supermarkets.

Shieshuk: I love Tesco... and you are quite right the clothes made by Florence & Fred and Cherokee are fab and great value for money. Although my partner does all the food shopping so her prefers Sainsburys which I think is over priced.

Tesco also do some great offers on wines although my friend who lives in Newcastle seems to get better offers than us and I have before been cheeky enough to ask for the same offer in my local store which they have honered!!!

Also bought a cardi which was in the sale for £15 and when I was charged full price at the counter and realised when I got to the car. I returned to complain and they gave me my full money back saying it is their policy to give the item Free of Charge is overcharged!!! great wish I purchased two!! lol

A big  to Tesco

I got a new PSX game worth £35 for £15.99 once as it was in one of those perspex security cases with a £15.99 red sticker on it - I knew it was no doubt a mistake as the game was a new release but they honoured the price!!!!

Great customer service!!

& look it has not affected their profits at all !!!!

The article in Metro this morning said Tesco were being accused of exploiting workers on their farms to keep costs low and not supplying them with the safety equipment they required etc.

I worked for tesco many years ago and they employed someone full time to remove and put on dearer price tags.I thought this was illegal, but don't know for sure.

We are fortunate having a Tesco in Dinnington.
We get points for what we spend which accumilate over the year.
Points also go on the petrol so we get petrol from there, Points go on house insurance so we get that from there as well.
We just got a quote for car insurance which is £100 cheaper than the company we used last year, so we are changing that as well.
Downside
Not much cheap beer

All in all well done tesco, also for employing twice as many people than the British army!

When i worked at Tesco the poster in the staff areas used to say stuff like - we made a trillion pounds profit in 6 months and its all down to you etc etc. Don't bloody share it though did they ??

i think attention should also be paid to Walmart, its so huge in the states its scary and its getting over here now via Asda. The americans even say if Walmart don't sell it you don't need it!!

Its creeping in slowly - you have been warned.

At to Tesco growing larger does this not have a negative affect on the small retailers who cant hope to compete with the big companies like tescos.
So for every jod created at Tescos maybe some one else will be losing theirs.

The general quality of Tesco goods is low IMO, only the 'Finest' range is of any decent quality.

No wonder they are making billions in profits if there is such a high markup on products!

There's two in the Yarm area now... one at Eaglescliffe, and a 24 hour Tesco at Ingleby Barwick. I love Tesco! :D

Yet Walmart is regarded in the states by many as evil, and a vast number of shoppers refuse to shop there!

I believe they've been cleared by the OFT over this issue!

based on the tv program the smaller shops and markets seem well able to compete on price, so i doubt it has too large an impact.

Personally I prefered the Morrisons in Dinnington.

I'm not impressed with their 'Value' range. The labelling seems to imply that these products are supposed to be decent value for money, but it doesn't actually say 'good value' it just says 'value'. I suppose this keeps them on the right side of the trading laws but it has to be said that the majority of this range is absolutely lousy value for money.

In my mind these products are specifically targeting people on low incomes such as pensioners and duping them into thinking that they receiving good food at a fraction of normal prices.

I think they have a long way to go before taking over the world. It wasn't so long ago that they were forced to pull out of France because they couldn't compete in the aggressive trading environment. They still have a million miles to go before they are in the Wall Mart league. They do however have their fingers in quite a few pies and have clever exploited the Asia market and uncommon European areas such as Poland, Czech Republic and Slovakia. The boom of their .com business has also been a great success.

Hi Hook

Yep my Sister now uses the one at the old Savacentre site at the Horse and Jockey roundabout and our Mam uses the smaller one at Ingleby Barwick which used to be Safeway!!

Both think Tesco is much better than Asda/Morrisons!!!

Though agree Tesco's beer offers are pretty dire!! My Hubby usually gets the beer shop in !!!!

Went to France last week, it was 21p a bottle of peroni in the hypermarket in Calais, bought over 100 bottles! Saves the beer buying from Tesco for a while!

Tesco's is just incredibly convenient, and so much cheaper than the Safeway that used to be there, and the in Yarm provides a nice range where we previously had to go out of town for the shopping. I love the points as well, and they soon accumulate up, saving even more money! :D

Now I'm Sheffield I find myself going to the big 24 hour Tesco rather than some of the closer supermarkets, just because it's Tesco!

I lived in Yarm for 14 years, and spent many summers growing up throwing 2ps into the arcades in Redcar, and eating Lemon Tops walking along the beach walking my next door neighbours dog!

I also have a few close friends in Redcar from my last job, the head chef was from Redcar as well as a few of the waitresses!

Anyway.. that's totally off topic :help:

Pacittos (Lemon Tops), Parmesans, Beaches, Bowlingo, Mungle Jungle, Newboulds pork pies....completely off topic but things not found in Sheffield......:(

If anyone has a pizza shop....please introduce parmo's and let me, Ando, Louise and Hook know!!!!!
