I phoned labour ward at 7 as instructed by my consultant, to see how full they were. Midwife told me to call back at 10 as they were fit to bursting. I pottered about for a bit, had some tea and toast and phoned back at 10. Midwife told me I could make my way in, and they'd see me when I got there. So, off we went to the hospital, went up to the labour ward where I was introduced to a lovely scottish midwife called Cathy. She showed me to a bed on the assessment part, took my BP, sample etc as they do. Then she set me up on the monitor and left me for half hour to stitch my David Tennant ( I'm x stitch mad hehe ) She came back about 40 minutes later to look at the monitor etc and offered me some lunch (Bangers and mash, lush) She examined me and said my cervix was very unfavourable, long but soft, gave me a prostin and put me back on the monitor (1pm). I started getting niggles almost instantly, and they soon progressed into contractions. By the time she took the monitor off me after an hour and a half, I was most definitely in labour, and a bit of shock to be honest, I didn't expect it to work first time round, let alone that quickly! I went to the loo, it took me 10 minutes to do the tiniest wee cos I was contracting so much! The midwives finally decided to move me from the assessment part into a single room. By this time I was in some serious pain and contractions were coming really fast. I laid over the birthing ball for a little while, but just couldn't get comfortable. I laid on the bed for a little bit, and decided I was ready for some pain relief. I sent my OH for the midwife and told him to ask her for some pethadine for me, she said sure, but wanted to examine me first. She did and I was already 4cm dilated (4pm). After the pethadine, I felt really dopey and drowsy, I can remember commenting on something to do with Judy as Richard and Judy was on the tv at the time, can't for the life of me remember what I said though! Ah well, never mind. The pethadine didn't really do much for me apart from make me feel sleepy so I asked for an epidural, which I never thought I would ever do in a MILLION years. Midwife said no though, that it'd be too late by the time the Dr got there to give it to me, but offered me gas and air instead. I took the gas and air, although reluctantly as it didn't really do much for me last time, but I thought in for a penny in for a pound. It actually worked for me very well this time, and I progressed very quickly. I felt like my waters had gone so I told my OH to buzz for the midwife. She came but didn't look very comfortable. She said it wasn't my waters but put a pad between my legs to see what it was. Unbeknown to me at the time I was actually bleeding fresh blood, and the midwives were worried. The midwife came back with another lady and told me I had to get ready to push. They moved the bed into the middle of the room and got me sat up ready. I was told I had to push as it was very important they get my baby out as soon as possible. They put the monitor on me to check his heart beat and it'd dropped, to a plod. I pushed a few times and finally he was born, and delivered onto my belly. He was VERY blue and wouldn't breathe. They took him away onto the resus table to try and get him to breathe. It seemed like an eternity and I was just totally in shock, listening to them working on him to get him to breathe. Finally he let out a gurgly cry and started to pink up, but was quite raspy. They laid him onto me for some skin on skin for about 45 minutes to try and regulate his breathing a bit, which worked a treat. I asked to see the placenta (My interest for midwifery getting the better of me lol!) And the midwife explained to me why they needed to get him out so fast. A few days before I was induced (tuesday) I had been in to see my consultant, who gave me a sweep, and I started to bleed a little. The midwife in with us said it wasn't unusual, and gave me a pad. I was still bleeding but only a little when I came in on thursday for induction. The midwife who was with me in labour then explained that the bleed and the sweep were just coincidence that one followed the other, and infact what had happened was my placenta had started to rupture and come away before he was born. So, all in all I would say I was pretty lucky I got induced when I did, because things could have been a whole lot worse. doodle 22-06-2008, 14:31 Oh Peaches. I'm so glad it has ended so happy.
