View Full Version : I've got a new dog (hopefully!)
RainRescue brought me a lovely old lad (http://s162.photobucket.com/albums/t248/Dozy_album/Sonny/) on Tuesday night, poor thing is 15 years old and very stressed.
He's settling down a bit, but he still cries a lot of the time, so they're going to get me a DAP collar and diffuser, to see if that helps him a bit.
He was Sonny, but at the moment I'm calling him Zeb, short for Zebedee, because he bounces round like he's on a spring :hihi: He certainly makes my Mina (also 15) look like a really staid old lady.
If he manages to settle down properly chez Dozy, he'll become a permanent fixture. I really hope he does, because he's such a lovely, affectionate boy and deserves to have a nice comfortable home for the time he has left.
So, everybody please keep your fingers crossed that he does settle in properly.
Awww what a lovely boy, hasn`t he got such a gentle face and kind eyes.
I bet he is so bewildered and is wondering what is happening to him.
Well done for taking an `oldie` on.
I adore oldies they always seem so wise!
Massive hugs and cuddles from me and i really hope he settles in quickly.

SpeedDemon 19-06-2008, 17:44 awww he looks lovely. Hope he settles in well with you, I guess it's really hard to get the old dogs a loving home. Thats lovely that you're taking him in Dozy :D
Moonbird 19-06-2008, 18:12 It's just wonderful that you could give Zeb a new home for his last years, I'm sure that he will settle down, it must be a lot of adjustment foe such an old man to make.
I am sure that he will give Mina a new lease of life too :)
Good luck to you and zeb:)
dogs4life 19-06-2008, 20:08 what a brilliant happy post - he is a lovely guy and well done you for giving him the chance to have a happy life with you - no dog of that age should end up in a noisy pound - good luck to you :thumbsup:
spottie2101 19-06-2008, 20:57 We bought him from the pound and he was so sweet but you are right he is a bouncy lad.
Im keeping everything crossed for you it works out he deserves somewhere nice for the remaining years he has.
Good on you giving the old man a chance :)
Rainrescue 19-06-2008, 21:54 Dozy - you are a saint - he is trying of anyones personality - and I know u know what you have taken on. To think that we had a place in a fantastic sanctuary - because I had this doddery old 15 yr old coming out - then Zeb turned up.
We have had him in boarding for almost a month now - and he was in the pound for about 3 wks before coming out - so no wonder he is crazy with it all. It will all take time to sort out.
I will order the Dap things tonight and get sent out to you - lets hope they work.
What about some calming herbs?
Not doddery in the slightest is he - in fact - he is a hyper 3 yr old i think with mangey teeth. I think it is all burn up stress - he is definately lost - and like u say - i think he is looking for his home and his owners, but who knows? once their history has gone - we have no idea and have to start from scratch.
thankfully his nature is 100% - he does enjoy and need company - once he settles down enough to appreciate it.
Keep in touch - and thank you for giving him a try in a home again.
aww he's lovely and well done you giving an oldie a chance. Hope he settles and gives you oodles of happiness xk

If you've met him, you know what a sweetheart he is. It was the eyes that got to me - he just looked so sad in the photos. And I couldn't bear the thought of my poor old lass in a similar situation, so I just had to give him a chance.
He's still using the eyes to good effect - he keeps plonking his head on my lap, which plays havoc with my typing because the laptop is usually on it already - and he just looks at me. And he's got the most wonderful, soft ears, they're lovely to stroke!
spottie2101 20-06-2008, 12:24 Yep its the eyes and ears that got to me, he looked so frail in the pound he just made my heart melt.
Fingers crossed he settles in well.
Give him a hug from aunty Kay xxx
wondertec 20-06-2008, 12:27 His picture makes me want to cry, he looks so sad! Well done dozy, ur an angel, hoping he settles in well and has lots of fun.x.
Plain Talker 20-06-2008, 18:13 Aww dozy, Kudos to you for taking on an oldie. Bless you, in SPADES for giving this lad a forever home. *hugs*
He looks a real smasher!
(and loads of "welcome, Zeb" scruffles for him and Mina, from K and trix)
moomooland 20-06-2008, 22:22 congrats you!! he'll be fine, i took an old lad in last year (think hes about 109!) looked practically at deaths door. anyhow with lots of luv and constant spoiling hes as happy as larry and now skips everywhere on his little arthritic legs. he has a very young sister at 3.5 yrs and they are inseperable. so good luck and dont worry your other old girl will have a new lease of life and a new best friend, she'll show him the ropes. just imagine the conversations they're having. lol well done again. all the best xxx

He really is so loving. He's lying on the sofa now, using my calves as a pillow, which is fine, but my legs have started going to sleep!
One of the main reasons I took him was because he was so old! After my partner died so suddenly 3 years ago, I said no more pets, because I just didn't want to take on any long-term responsibilities.
But since he was 15 - the same age as my Mina - my peculiar logic said it would be OK to take him in!!
Plain Talker 21-06-2008, 17:07 My rescued cat, Tawny (RIP) was an elderly boy, whom my ex hubby and I took on.
We were happy to take him on and give him a "forever home". Even if he only had a couple of years with us, (which is what he had) at least we were comforted, knowing that he had a loving, safe, environment to live in, and see his days out, rather than being cooped up, in the pound, unwanted, bored rigid in a cage.

This is how I felt when I took on Lucy, and she was with me for just 2 years...it wasn't long enough, I still miss my little cuddle monster, she had such a big character I think older dogs do.
Everyone kids themselves that they won't let them creep into their heart but they are so subtle with it :D
I love older dogs they are great and so much less trouble than puppies (ooh do I know this :hihi: ) they have learned the rules and just want cuddles, love and a quiet life
Rainrescue 22-06-2008, 21:33 Lets hope I can find 2 more nice people like you Dozy who will take on our Nana and Grandad (not together I might add)
These old ones get a rough deal when they are dumped and thank goodness some people can manage to squeeze them in.
happy zzzzzzzzz'ing
thursday 23-06-2008, 19:40 He looks lovely, Dozy: well done for giving him a home. :) I hope he settles down and enjoys being a family dog again. :)
Can't wait to read his contributions to the "Dear Forum, I Have A Problem...." thread! :hihi:
Well, Zeb has his first real sulk yesterday, so I think he's feeling fairly at home!
We had a slight disagreement about whether it was convenient for him to sprawl on the sofa with me and have a fuss. I won. Instead of just getting down and lying on the floor or on his bed, he took himself into the living room and went on the sofa in there! Exactly what Mina does, when she can't get her own way.
He also had his first night of sleeping with Mina and George (cat) in the living room, instead of in the parlour with me (though I still slept on the sofa, just in case). He wasn't too keen - we had door scraping and barking and whining for quite a while, but I just ignored him.
I think he must have settled down after that, because he didn't wake me up during the night. I approached the living room door with trepidation this morning, not knowing what to expect. The first thing I saw was George, perched grumpily on a foot stool bean bag, rather than on the back of the sofa!
But nothing chewed, no pee or poop in the kitchen, no distressed doggy, just waggy tails and let me out for a pee, please!!
I'm delighted - I might even get to sleep in my own bed soon!! Now I just need to stop him getting into a state when I go out of the house and leave him for a while, so roll on delivery of DAP collar and diffuser.
He is gorgeous, the old boys and girls deserve someone like you
Rainrescue 24-06-2008, 20:50 Wow Dozy - fantastic news - sounds like a huge hurdle over with a settled night.
Also, he is ready to get to the vets for his stitches out and wounds checked over.
Do you need me to take you or is one close by?
