300 quid...you might want to times your budget by three and you still may struggle then they go for ALOT of money
my mums chihuahuas were £500+ 6 years ago! (boys) although tiny was actually alittle less as his jaw was under/ovber shot (I can never remember which)
skinnydog 18-06-2008, 20:14 This minatureising does not make for a healthy animal!
pinklady 18-06-2008, 20:21 buy a rat ..... make a little coat for it and walk it daily ........ you'll fool everyone :hihi:
seriously, £300 will not buy you any pedagree dog ...... never mind such a speciality one.
LaceyHiggs 18-06-2008, 22:07 tea cups are not any different to normal bred chi's except bred extreamly small and have lots of problems you will be looking atleast £1200 for a pedigree.
and double that for future vets bills if they have lots of problems as mentioned!
This sounds like another fad 'toy' that will be done to death and forgotten about before long. If you really want a Chi you'd be better off getting a proper one from a reliable source. Personally though, I'm a sucker for the English Toy Terrier (think tiny doberman) now that's a mini dog that was built for a purpose (ratting) - it's ancestry goes at least 200 years and this breed has far fewer health issues to contend with.
Why do smaller dogs cost more eh? :loopy: :hihi:
Prefer more dog for my money personally ;)

If you can only afford £300, then how will you afford vet's fees? A quick search on the web found this list of problems (http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/29436/chihuahua_health_problems_hydrocephalus.html) that chihuahuas can suffer from.
Although it's not certain that any pup you got would have any of these problems, it's still a risk.
Pet insurance might be an answer, but I'd check with a few firms first, to see if they insure chihuahuas and if any common illnesses are excluded from the cover.
My brother's ex had a couple of chihuahuas and he says they were the nastiest, snappiest and most vicious dogs he'd ever come across!
You should also bear in mind that any cheaper puppies could well come from puppy farms, and would therefore be even more prone to weakness and illness, because of their poor start in life.
wondertec 20-06-2008, 12:29 Please tell me you aren't wanting it for a "paris Hilton" look, dressing it up and carrying it round in a little bag.... That's not what pets are for.

I think partly because bitches tend to have smaller litters so there are fewer of them about. That and all the so-called 'celebs' making certain breeds )or non-breeds/mongrle mixes) trendy.

and temperament problems
my mothers chihuahuas are lovely (to me)
theyre not small though!! and they weigh a ton (especially tiny - hes a dead weight!)
it makes me sad when I tell people I have chihuahuas and they think I got them to be cool, ours are 6 years old and mum picked them!
plus - tiny climbs in bags to steal butties, not for me to carry him around!

god no, what it is, is that i have a dog atm, and she's got three legs, bless her i love her to bits its just that i want her to have a friend and coz i live with my grandparents and due to space it wouldnt really be fair to get a large-ish dog.
as for the £300 budget that is separate from vets fees and such else
all in all i have £2000 for this dog at present, but like someone said, i should take out pet insurance and such else. I just don't want to be spending a ridiculous amount on a woof woof...
xx
surely theres small dogs in rescue? might be a better bet :)
geerarffe 20-06-2008, 18:54 You do realize teacup is just a term made up for the runt of the litter to make it easier for breaders to sell them right?

Including disproportion in whelping and Hydrocephalus/ incomplete closure of the skull vault, being amongst the more major of the difficulties they have.
