i have also got a wirless router and dongle but everytime i connect it up downstairs to main modem same proplem cant connect to internet ???
You wont be able to use the other cable modem upstairs as the MAC address will not be registered with Virgin and so wont be able to connect to their network and pick up an IP address. Unless it's an extra one that you've bought from Virgin that you're paying an additional subscription for that is!
I'm not sure about the Wireless problem. Is it an Access point that has the correct connection? (Not ADSL)
Your Cable Modem should connect to the wall via the thick coaxial cable. Then your wireless router should connect to you modem via an ethernet cable. Is this set up correctly? If so, ensure your settings on your router are set to get it's IP dynamically.
Apologies if this is no help, but best to start at the beginning!

I believe it needs to be the blue ethernet cable for Cable broadband.. Not a standard one..
I'm not 100% on that though!

Any colour ethernet cable will be fine.

Is there a setting in your router for DHCP under LAN settings? If so, is it enabled?
What router is it?
Seems like you are connecting by using your usb port, which would reqire a login but if you use the ethernet to connect to LAN then no login required and it should go through as part of the virgin network.

Thats what I thought, but when I went for the 20Mb Virgin broadband the other month, I couldn't get it up and running.
I rang the helpline and they went through the setup with me which was fine, except I used my old BT ethernet cable from the modem to the wireless router.
They told me to replace that with the blue one in the Virgin Media box and it worked, and has worked fine ever since.
Must just be a one off but thats what the problem was in my case because after I had it running, I tried another white ethernet cable between them and it stopped again.. Weird stuff :D
Coincidences. The colour of an ethernet cable doesn't denote its electrical characteristics. Chances are the droid from VM was also blindly reading a script that will assume that anything you have done is wrong so will make you do everything as per their sheet.
