I am planning to run a free course on Pay Per Click (PPC) Google Adwords - how to set up and manage a capmpaign for best results.

I'm looking for approx 10-12 people who are at basic starter level; so people who have either never used Adwords before or have dabbled but are still not sure what to do, or how to do it properly. The session would be aimed at those who want it explained easily and jargon-free and not include anything that is beyond that level, not on this session anyway.

The session would be around 2 hrs including a coffee break of course! The only thing I need to arrange is a suitable training room central for Sheffield.

Would anyone here be interested to join the group?

Thanks Louise I will.

I dont want to wait too long, but would like to give plenty of notice.

I am aiming for an early evening session, perhaps 6-8pm - something people can attend without taking time off work or out of their business.

Not to put a dampner on it but i was on a business course with local business people and one guy said it wasn't unheard of for some businesses to continuoulsy click their competitors adds. Thus racking up the pay per click costs!

I believe google run algorithms to check for fraud. I've no idea if this is true or even do-able (track ip addresses and look for patterns?) - its the most obvious loophole in the system so I imagine google do work hard to prevent it.

I've been using adwords for about 4 years now and I can testify it is a superb advertising tool, so don't be put off by the potential problems if you're thinking of signing up (unless you're a training business - in which case, forget google and consider a fancy TV advert on channel 5.)

Thanks 'blacksheep' but as this is about a Adwords course can we stay on track for the thread please. All this will be covered in the course...of course!

But to answer the question, yes Google do monitor who is clicking ;)

I thnk adwords are a good way of getting people to see your website and then clicking through otherwise what is the reason for the site, I cannot see the point of spending lots of money on your website to be developed, if no one sees it I am having mine completely revamped.Like everything else Adwords need to be done properly with an impressive landing page etc I have an 80 page article by Brad Callen on google adwords but as I am an internet numptie it is beyond me.

Hi all,

ok we seem to have around 10-12 people interested which, if most turn up will allow for a good small group.

Due to work committments, it will likely be mid September when I do this session. I will sort out a date and a venue and PM you with further details well before to give as much notice as possible. It will be an evening, approx 6-8pm and I will try to get somewhere with free parking.

Just to re-iterate, this is a beginners learning session for people with a website who currently use, or plan to use, Google Adwords. Maybe you are unsure how it works or you are using it without much success.

Thanks

I'd be interested. I've set up a campaign for someone else once, but my stance has always been: Use the money you pay on PPC adverts to gain a natural search engine placement instead, so i'd be interested in possibly finding out I am wrong, or at least misguided.

INDIZINE
16-08-2008, 09:37 PM
There isnt a right or wrong for PPC Vs SEO as the two provide for a different response.

PPC can get you off the ground when your site is new and still low in the SERP's. In an ideal world if finance perrmits, you would run a PPC campaign alonside an SEO campaign.

Eventually if you got your best performing keywords to the top of the SERP's giving you the results you want (ie sales or enquiries) you can downsize the cost of your PPC campaign. That said, you could also still keep it going and reap benefits of both, as the big guns do. The top performers always have both, if you notice. They don't drop PPC just because they got to No.1 on Google. But it's about what you can afford.

A website should also be page-optimised. If it's built correctly, you can do a bit of external SEO yourself, if you have the time and inclination to do it, but not everyone wants or can do, hence they outsource it. But it's not rocket science; you just need the interest, commitment and patience, as it takes many months or even a couple of years to see those results, depending how much you invest in it.

The point about PPC is that it must be a correctly set-up campaign to a) give you the best results and b) ensure you are not paying more per-click than you need to.

espadrille: I will add your name; I have tried to PM you with my direct email address but your PM Inbox is full so can you clear it and I will try and send it again?

Looks like we may need 2 courses as I have about 20 names at least, though not all have confirmed as yet. Those that confirm by end of next week will give me an idea of final numbers to book the room (according to seating, that is).

I think most pepple associate web-related stuff with blokes! And to be fair, it usually is.

I sent a PM to you on 20th August 7.05pm, asking you to email me, as I have done with everyone who showed an interest. From those 25 people I have had 12 confirmed emails, so I needed to know that I had at least 10-12 to run a group. If you dont think you have emailed me, send again. Because some people's emails and names dont match their SF member name I cant always match them up by name, so Im just going by who has replied to the PM and emailed me.

Why is it free? Because it's a pilot session and no other reason. I have delivered hundreds of training courses, half of them on marketing and busines planning. I now want to put my PPC knowledge into a 2hr session, aimed at beginners, in plain English and easy to understand terms.

It's not for folk to attend who will be there only to collect your business card and hope they can sell their relative services to you afterwards, even I wont be doing that! It's not for advanced learners who will want to ask questions beginners cannot relate to and thus feel inadequate or frustrated.

It will get straight down to business and focus only on what's in the course delivery content. I don't sell PPC management services and have no intention of doing so.

What people learn from the session, they can either go away and implement themselves if they feel confident or have the time, or, they can go out and find someone who sells that service and at least they know what to ask for and what their provider should be telling them and doing for them, so at least they have an understanding of why they are paying for PPC management services.

Look at it like this; The newspapers and magazines sell you advertising space but they don't tell you how to lay your advert out (unless its a price inclusive of design or a service they sell to you) or what to put in it. The sales agents don't usually get involved in your actual advert, it isn't their responsibility as they are just providing the platform to advertise your product or service. That is what Google does.

What and how you do it is up to you. Google do provide guidelines on how to use it, but it depends if you can digest and follow what you have read when it comes to implementing it.

Because I want to run a course with at least 10-12, I need at least 15 confirmed names (I have 12 emails confirmed so far) as there will always be a couple that drop out on the night for unforeseen things.

Just an update (an unfortunate one at that) depsite emailing out to 24 people who expressed their interest here (originally had 30+) I finally only got a total of 9 replies to the booking form sent out, with just 3 confirming to attend and 6 who cant make it. Obviously I cant run a course with only 3 people in attendance, so I have had to cancel the sessions and send my apologies for this. I have emailed the 3 people who confirmed, to let them know it is cancelled, but thought I had better update it here as well.

Thank you to Daren at Newchannels who had offered their boardroom for these sessions.
