Some advice please for a friend, she is thinking of keeping a male puppy out of her recent litter, and she is obviously going to get him neutered, will this stop his "urges" so when his mum comes into season he will not try to mate, and will this stop him from wanting to run second the door opens.
Are will it better for the mum to be spayed, rather then son been done.

both, Shihtzu, tell her to have them both done.
it's not fair on the mum to be coming into season, and the risks to her of not being "Doctored", and it would not be fair to him to be "done" and to be able to smell her being in season, and not be able to do anything about it. It's also not fair to him cos if he's left "Intact" he'll smell other females in heat and want to go after them.
Having both done will protect both of them, and make both dogs healthier and longer lived, and cut down drastically on the risk of certain conditions.

it's logic, really,
if they only have him "done" she'll still be coming into season, so they'll be having the fun and games of having all the intact males, from miles and miles around, camping on their doorstep.
If they have her "done", but not him, the potential is there for him to be one of the males camping out on the doorstep of some owner, elswhere, who has an Intact Female.
and as has been pointed out, both of these dogs deserve the benefits (and longer lives) of being protected from/protecting others from the consequences of things like cancers, and unwanted pregnancies.

Yeah, I'd have both done too but will tell you that my neutered male gets very frisky with the ladies down the park when they're due in season. It's quite funny really as he's 13 and only ever really perks up like that with his ears back and his held high when he's flirting!
My mum had a neutered dog that would still roam and used to escape and walk miles to a bitch in season but this certainly isn't the norm and Eddy doesn't do it, he just gets excited when he meets a nice smelling lady (doesn't mount, just flirts).

I think get both done too, my neutered male is totally uninterested in bitches and roaming... but when I had an unspayed bitch come into season (she was too old to spay when I got her) she tormented him relentlessly, poor old lad he didn't have a clue... but he did snap at her a few times she was absolutely relentless and he was fed up of her attentions :hihi:
Thing is she wasn't spayed and knew he was a male, obviously it was a torment to her, so its kindest (and much more peaceful) to just get both done in the long run.
