I've just had an email about the Zoombak Advanced GPS Pet Locator.

The once Oz went missing, I would have done anything for him to be wearing one of these. I remember I kept thinking I wish I could satellite track him. Can't say I'll be forking out £74.99 though!

This is the email I got

"Is your pet the adventurous type? Do you often catch them whistling the theme tune to "The Great Escape" whilst trying to look innocent? Are they regularly found exploring the neighbourhood for treats when they should be safe indoors?
However mischievous they might be, a lost pet is always a source of pain and worry for a family. That's why, as someone who has purchased books about pets, pet accessories or who may own a pet, you might be interested in the new Zoombak Advanced GPS Pet Locator.

Using satellite signals, you can quickly locate your pet in real time, and even set up alerts to let you know when your pet has left a designated "safe area". Lightweight, waterproof and durable, the Zoombak offers peace of mind for pet owners everywhere"

lol, are you sure you want to know that information.

It is expensive. Personally I am not going to bother. I'm waiting for a microchip type devise to be invented that does the same job as sat nav, so there is something inside them. It would put my mind at rest with the horse and thefts! (Although I'm sure it's not great having electrical bits inside our pets bodies).

pets at home sent me an email last week and they're selling it for £99 so £74.99 seems more reasonable. Havent read much about it but if it's something that dangles off a collar, I can guarantee Ailsa would lose it in seconds flat- she rolls in the park and has lost or broken no end of flashing night lights, collars and name tags...

I think its pretty cheap as when we got Kira back after running off from the kennels it cost us nearly 60 quid to just get her back, and if it puts my mind at ease along with knowing where she is all the time its great!

I was looking at one at 200 quid and considering that when i get paid!

I remember seeing these locator things and apparently, there are lots of flaws with them being so new - they give a very vague idea of where your pet might be for a start.

I wouldn't waste my money but would wait for them to have been out a while and improved on.

Compared to the £100 I've spent on getting Molly covered by the Petback Protect scheme for life and a DNA sample stored etc, this is really not that bad (provided it works, doesn't get lost etc).

As it is Molly lost her first Petback tag so we had to get them to send us another one which is now attached to her collar with two split rings through the hole in an attempt to secure it for a little longer than the last one.

I think that the first versions of virtually every system turn out to have major drawbacks and be much more expensive than the latter (more effective) versions of the same thing, so I don't think I'll be adding to the insurance, microchip and Petback that she's already got at the moment.

Ooh i just watched a Harrison Ford film where his family were kidnapped by evil baddies and he managed to track them down cos he heard their dog barking on the ransom call and the dog had a GPRS collar!! :o :hihi:

Great idea, but I too would rather wait until they can develop the technology to fit in a microchip. The GPRS thingy looks really bulky, and from previous observations when people's dogs go missing they have always lost their collars somehow - which would make the whole thing a waste of time.

edit: just had a proper look and it's £75 PLUS £9.99/mth service charge :o

Yeah, it is completley useless if your pet gets stolen too, which surely is a main reason of getting one.

I noticed the £10 a month service charge too. You would be wanting you dog to run off a good few times a month to get your monies worth! :hihi: I'd be letting Oz take himself out for that :hihi:)

£100 for molly-Moo is cheaper than they wanted to charge me for each cat! i had the free plan for a year for most of them -I forgot how much they wanted to renew for life cover or even just annually but it was more than £100 per pet so I didn't bother. Ailsa is still covered though because I still insure her through Petplan and it was part of the deal at the time. Having them all micorchipped as well was worthwhile

Do these come in Ratty size?

Ever since the little sods discovered how to get through the latest security device on the cage I never know where they are:suspect:

Usual haunts include:
- Under the sofa
- In the sofa
- Up your jumper
- Down your jumper
- Anywhere there is food
- Near anything that can be shredded and neatly arranged into a nest

That pretty much covers it, good luck!

I read a whole website with interest but came to the conclusion I'd be better off stitching a pocket to Brude's Hi-Vis jacket and inserting an old mobile phone - and that way I can ring him if he strays too far in the woods, and may have half a chance of locating him without any third party charges or intervention!

the GPS thing doesn't guarantee the dog warden won't get to your dog first btw ;)

The thing about this is from the technical details it gives it says
"Finds lost valuables quickly and easily; Locate mode finds tagged items up to an incredible 122 metres / 400 feet" which really isnt that far and if its a dog and mobile itll keep moving!
