The Sheffield Star dated April 7th 2001 an article appeared about a humming noise that is keeping Sheffield awake at night..

Heard at Ringinglow, Halfway, Westfield ,Crookes, Bents Green and a few other places..anyone living in these areas still hearing this humming or has it stopped?

It was a while ago now, '98 or '99 probably, and I was awake in bed, it was summer, and I was looking up through my skylight and a bright light shot through the sky over my house, accompanied with an electronic sounding hum. I live in the lower walkley area. When the light shot off into the night, so did the humming sound.

I remember that being reported and never truly idenitified as to its cause although there were some interesting theories.
I think Woodseats was one of the peak areas too.
I have heard some stuff recently but only after around 1am and before 4 am (Im an insomniac), I don't know if it's the hum or just traffic and electrical items in the house though I can't locate the source.

One common cause of hums is transformer laminations being 'loose' inside power transformers.

If you're near a substation that has older transformers in it, the soft iron lamnations in the transformers (they're metal plates that the wire in the transformer is wound around) can vibrate against each other if they're not properly secured.

It's not a safety issue, but is annoying. I used to get it with some old amateur radio kit. You sometimes get similar effects near overhead power lines.

Alternatively, ask the guy who lives down the block with the grey skin and the almond shaped eyes if he can tune up his Bambleweeny 650 UFO drive in teh daytime......;)

ive heard this electrical humming a lot of nights here in stocksbridge.
from my back garden.
isn't there a sub station at back of station rd somewhere.
could be coming from there.
