*Peaches* 16-06-2008, 03:39 PM A lot of people ask me why they should adopt a piggy, instead of buying one from a pet shop, so I thought I would post a few reasons why
~ Rescues very rarely "mis-sex", so no chance of babies.
~ Often pet shops will either breed themselves or buy in cheap from back yard breeders, and don't particularly care if they are inbred or not.
~ Pet shops can't help you bond pairs.
~ Pet shops often sell rabbits with piggies, not a good idea.
~ Pet shops will not take back piggies you can no longer care for
~ Rescues often give life time support, and will help you in any way they can
~ A common myth with rescues and piggies, people often think babies are not available, but they are. Usually this is a result of reason #1
If anyone would like more reasons why, would like to ask questions etc PLEASE feel free to either PM me, or ask on this thread :)
If this post has changed one persons mind, then it was worth it
holidayhutch 16-06-2008, 05:00 PM I have to agree Rescue Piggies are fantastic, we own one ourselves called George and he is such a little character. We bonded him with Caramel who was a guinea pig left here with a rabbit by it's owners who never came back. We separated them and got them each a new partner of their own kind and they all live here happily with us now:) We had great support from the rescue we got George from.
f1freak 16-06-2008, 05:22 PM Fantastic thread. All my piggys are rescued and i think its great youve started a thread about why the importance of rescuing. Although i think Piggys should come with a warning...highly addictive!!!! lol..
liz n piggys xx
*Peaches* 16-06-2008, 05:23 PM I know only too well the addictiveness of piggies, many a time its caused an argument in my house cos I've said yes to one more in desperate need, the OH argues they're always in need and I'm too soft. I must admit I am a big softy though :hihi:
f1freak 16-06-2008, 05:32 PM hehehe i dont know if its their personalities, the piggy lips or the popcorning that gets me!! lol..But god help me if i was ever in a situation where i could open a rescue myself .I dont think i could turn any down ..lol. My OH knows where he comes in the list of importance lol.
*Peaches* 16-06-2008, 05:33 PM I didn't plan it, it just sorta happened. I do it all off my own back from my own finances.
f1freak 16-06-2008, 05:34 PM Well good on you xxx
teeny 16-06-2008, 05:43 PM all my piggies are rescue, i can't abide pet shops I do think its so much better to rescue an unwanted piggy, kinder and more caring.
Jess22 16-06-2008, 05:47 PM What a great post Peaches. I recently adopted Heff from Peaches and he is great. A lot better route than going to a pet shop anyday.
Thanks Peaches, keep up the good work.
Heff has settled in well, he is a little character, a little shy but Little Pig is teaching him otherwise! He seems very happy though, and loves munching his veggies.
I take it if you are on here you aren't in labour!
*Peaches* 16-06-2008, 05:49 PM I wish I was in labour Jess :hihi:
Glad to hear the little guy is settling in well!
Jess22 16-06-2008, 05:52 PM Have you tried the usual? Curry etc Bet you can't wait for it to come out now :hehe
I'll have to get some photos taken soon to show the pair! OH has been trying to teach Heff to speak, Little pig does, he chatters when Stef makes G pig noises at him.
*Peaches* 16-06-2008, 05:53 PM He'll speak eventually, give him a few more wheeks :hihi:
f1freak 16-06-2008, 06:00 PM Is it mine that alittle on the dim side..but does anyones piggys " bus stop" for the same water bottle, even though there are 3 other bottles full ?! lol.
*Peaches* 16-06-2008, 07:46 PM Yes mine do it too, I've got a large group in an 8 foot hutch, and they will only ever use one bottle :loopy:
spottie2101 16-06-2008, 08:16 PM Sorry if i sound silly now but am i understanding right piggies cannot like with bunny kins????
I was thinking of getting him a piggie friend as well so glad i checked.
How long till baby bump makes his appearance now????
*Peaches* 16-06-2008, 08:19 PM No, rabbits and buns have very different dietary requirements, and a bite from a rabbit can kill a piggy.
He was due yesterday
spottie2101 16-06-2008, 08:22 PM Wont be putting any piggies at risk then thanks for sorting that one for me.
Wont be long now then hopefully, you must be really fed up caus you were fed up at the show and that feels like ages ago. Bless you sweetie :)
dogs4life 17-06-2008, 10:11 AM any news yet peaches? you can come and have a go on the trampoline if desperate :hihi: remember at the show I mentioned I had a load of guinea pig food and stuff you could have for your piggies - let me know where you are and we can sort - realise you may be too busy this month :)
*Peaches* 17-06-2008, 10:13 AM Nope no news yet, he's still happy in there :hihi:
I had 3 babies born last night to a rescue sow too
I'm about most of the time, just let me know when you're passing and I'll be in :)
Depending what happens at the hospital this afternoon I may be taking up that offer of the trampoline!
