pets@home 14-06-2008, 01:39 PM can anyone tell me why dogs eat grass ,is it like what my parants used to tell me that it is a medicine or is it because they want tobe sick or is it because they like it?the reason being a dog im fostering is eating quite a bit (i think he thinks he`s a horse):hihi:
Lotti 14-06-2008, 02:44 PM I think cats do it because they're going to be sick but I read recently that dogs eating grass is a sign of stress.
My dog actually does do it because she's seen a horse doing it and she even mimics the way the horse pulls it's head up to pull out the grass
jediwarrior 14-06-2008, 02:48 PM Dogs eat grasss to settle the tummys i think ours do it when there not well. They also do it when playing so to be honest i dont know why
holidayhutch 14-06-2008, 02:51 PM This has some interesting ideas on the question

JarvisCocker 16-06-2008, 10:57 AM When I looked into it I couldn't find a definite answer. Some say they do it to make themsleves sick, others say they do it just because they like it. Evie eats it sometimes, but I've not noticed it making her sick.
Moonbird 16-06-2008, 11:26 AM Interesting really, I find that my lot eat not only grass but a weed with sticky leaves that feels really harsh when you touch it (don't know the name) they love the sticky plant more than grass, almost pulling me over to get it at times
Unless their tums are upset already the grass (or plant) seems to make no difference at all, and comes out as you would expect in a load of grassy poo :gag:
But if they have an upset tum, they really gorge on the grass and seem desperate for it, then they are sick, and repeat the gorging and sickness till they feel better....I read somewhere (don't remember where) that they do it to lessen worm burden too.
All in all I don't think its anything to worry about and just normal behaviour for a dog.

I think you mean Cleavers (http://www.haworth-village.org.uk/nature/pictures/massive.asp?id=287) better known as Goosegrass.

:) Thats the one, my lot adore it, I'm always worried about them eating it as I wasn't sure what it was and didn't know if it was really good for them.
geckoqueen 16-06-2008, 01:04 PM Maisey loves Cleavers too. I worried at first buy they've never done her any harm - I'm sure I posted something about this before but can't find it.
Malky 16-06-2008, 01:10 PM My dog will eat anything but then again he is a Labrador. :D
jenna141230 16-06-2008, 02:47 PM talking of dogs eating strange things....
why do they eat manure and duck/swan poop?
I know i've read somewhere that they like the taste, but i'm finding it a bit of a struggle at the min going round rother valley as there is sooooo much of it around the river and mine cant resist!

I had that with Porscha in Hillsborough park last week, I just thought she was clinically insane... and also why do they insist in rolling in Fox poo!

Ailsa eats grass (and our golden hop in the garden), to make herself sick when she's had something too rich for her digestion. Usually self-inflicted, I might add (the carton of double cream she pinched from the worktop recently, for example)

Apparently goosegrass makes quite a refreshing natural tea, so if we can drink it without any harm I'm sure it's fine for dogs x
estweyn 16-06-2008, 09:39 PM I always thought that grass was a natural medicine for dogs and if they feel sick they will eat it to make themselves sick. Josh loves the goosegrass too and as for Rother valley, well its a nightmare with all the duck poo.
DiamondGirl 16-06-2008, 09:52 PM Mine dont do it when they are poorly. They do it when we are out walking when they are thirsty, they do it the get the moisture from the grass :)
