View Full Version : IPod shuffle - will it work without the SP2 on XP?
evening,
i'm wanting an iPod shuffle. i run windows XP pro, however, i have noticed that apple claim the system requirements for this device is XP pro with SP2.
as u have probably guessed, my XP is a copy and so those pesky microsoft lot won't let me download the SP2 update from them.
i've read the opinions on a couple of forums that the iPod shuffle works just fine without the SP2 update. was just wondering if anyone on here agrees with this?
thanx.

alchresearch 10-04-2005, 19:37 There is a way to integrate SP2 into Windows XP, it's called "Slipstreaming". I'm not going to tell you any more because you're an evil pirate taking money from a cash strapped company so do a Google search!
BTW, it will mean reinstalling Windows.
you can install SP2 on a copyed version, unless you used one of the banned serial codes... in which case you just change it... but I guess I better not tell you how, and definitly I aint gonna give you a code...
Microsoft suck at copy protection, all their stuff is easily bypassed ;) its all the latest games that suck :?
thanx for the advice. sounds a bit too techie for me. hopefully i won't have to sort it out because hopefully the shuffle will work without the SP2? anyone?

Sorry but it's your own fault for feeding the Pirates.. If you'd bought a legal proper copy of XP Pro you would be able to download SP2 perfectly fine.
I hate to be so blunt but Piracy does not pay and as you've found out to your detriment, causes other problems.
carcrash 11-04-2005, 19:40 Can you not just use it with itunes?

whats an ipod shuffle? Anyway my ipod can be used in windows regardless of security updates - though of course I have them not being a pirate. My point is it worked before I had the updates so I dont see how these can be relevant?

It's a really lame Ipod with limited memory and no display.
You're much better buying off a standard MP3 player.

jeez. i just copied it from my brother's legit copy. i'm not funding organised crime or anything. and it does pay, cos if it doesn't work without SP2... i'll just reinstall a copied version of the latest version of xp. it'll just be a pain having to reinstall from scratch again. i'm not paying microsoft prices for an operating system i barely use, if i can help it, which i can.
think i'm just gonna stick to my cd walkman. less hassle and less likely to get mugged.

Dont you listen to the negatives Mel!
Why pay nearly £100 when you can get it either free or from the internet?? Sort it out microsoft!!
because if you steal it you cant get the security updates. And then your computer gets used to attack other peoples computers via all the security holes you have left wide open and so you are a menace to other users of the internet who dont want their systems attacked. If you object to paying then dont use it...use linux which is free to use and it is just as good for most things.

OH Yes you can my dear fellow... oh yes you can!
Look around on google and you will see.

My girlfriend loves hers. She doesn't want/need a screen and 512Mb for £69 is a bargain. She likes the functionality and ease of use of iTunes, it's minimal weight and size (perfect for gym) and so a Shuffle was the right choice for her. We did a lot of looking around at other players and all things considered, this was right for her.
Saying something's lame when it has the most memory in it's price range and doesn't include a feature (and it's associated cost) that most people don't want/need seems harsh.
And it will work without SP2.

Not at all. My reasons are as follows:
You want a basic MP3 player - you can get a 512Mb one for as little as £40.
How many songs could you hold in 512Mb? Roughly assuming 3Mb per MP3 song, that's 170 songs. 170 miscellaneous songs on a player with no organisation is not very practical without a screen.
There are dozens of players out there, but for the money this looks pretty decent:

Pruned thread to remove postings re. piracy.
We don't condone or support it, and so if you post in support of it expect to get the posting pulled.
Thanks,
Joe
Actually, that's a pretty neat looking little player. I may have to get one myself...

you may not condone or support lots of things though, does that mean that no one else is allowed to talk about supporting them?
I don't think the forum could (or should) be allowed to be seen to allow/promote illegal activities and I guess that's what Joe's trying to stop in this thread.

i agree about promoting, as to 'allow' I would be offended if the forum believed it had any ability or right to interfere in my behaviour.
I wouldn't expect to be able to swap pirated music here, but I might like to discuss the issues surrounding it.
I didn't make my post quite clear, apologies. By "allow" I meant to write "allow the discussion of". Some boards have had hassles from copyright owners over even the discussion of piracy etc.

Really. I've never seen a single story in the news regarding that, and I do keep up with that sort of news.
Discussing piracy is clearly not illegal, and attempting to suppress the discussion probably would be.
The actuality of committing piracy is illegal, although not criminal and only loosely can be considered 'theft'.
alchresearch 12-04-2005, 21:33 Illegal or not, at the top of the "Ask an Expert" section it says:
"Note: This forum isnt for illegal software discussion".
It's Geoff's forum and his rules go, regardless of whether the subject is legal or not.
