shinyhappy68 13-06-2008, 11:06 PM Im currently doing my CCNA and have decided not to apply for jobs but to become self employed. The idea is to fit in around my young family......:loopy:
While im still doing my current job, id like to start building a profile and get known, I suppose is the best way to put it. As there are far less women, who are CISCO qualified, than there are men, Id appreciate any advice or info on where this could be advantageous, what I mean is are there any areas where its is preferable to have women engineers,eg domestic abuse refuges??
I would appreciate any suggestions for business name too, something which is not too girly, but feminine.
I thought "PC Angels" "Looking after your gateway" ?????
feedback appreciated. XXX
GrinderBloke 14-06-2008, 12:26 PM I seriously doubt many all female enviroments have enought netwoking kit for you to make a living.
Get yourself a full CRB check as without this you will not get into the type of enviroment you mentioned.
Go mainstream and offer a good value friendly professional service in all enviroments, that way you will be afford to eat.

I am fully CRB checked as work in Sure Start Childrens Centre at moment.
Thats my aim, to be mainstream but just curious about other options. If all else fails will apply for job with regular income, the money is good for CISCO Networking.
Thanks again. :)
in2town 14-06-2008, 04:57 PM As well as running a magazine website and previously owning a magazine, I am also a PR and Marketing expert (please no offers of work as my books are full) we are experts in getting people onto radio and TV, so what I would suggest for you is not to look at paid advertising in magazines and newspapers, but to look at what advertising you could generate for free. Have a look at what is special about your business and see if your local newspapers and radio would be interested. Look at why you are different from your competition and keep an eye on what is happening in the media and world to see if you can make a professional comment. Also contact your local media and let them know that if they every need a professional comment within your industry then you are available. I hope this helps

Pete1024 15-06-2008, 09:48 PM Hi Kerry,
Its good to see women getting involved in IT! When we advertise we get 95% of all job applications from males.
A Cisco qualification is not that focuses to small businesses, and by setting up I think you'd need to look at your target market and brand your business accordingly.
Are you looking to set up in Sheffield?

Hi, thanks for advice, yes im in s5, I need to be local as my kids are still young. Thats when I want to work for myself so I can be flexible for my family. Apart from that Im a total geek and love tinkering so its a job I really enjoy at any level, I may decide to stop with A+ for now depending on how time consuming N+ is!!!
ukstudent 18-06-2008, 10:22 PM Press releases are a good way of getting free publicity
Try local papers such as The Star
