Is there any way of stopping a dog digging, short of not letting it out in the garden!
I have a 10 month old Border Collie who loves nothing better than to dig holes round the edge of the garden. She has plenty of exercise and stimulation, so I don't think it's down to boredom. She digs so far then stops and start a new hole, my little terrier thinks it's great fun to join in!
Not only does the garden look a mess, she trails the mud into the house.
Any suggestions?

You need to find out why they are doing it before you can resolve it. It could be a number of reasons. Boredom (which you have ruled out). Habit (in which case you will need to distract them everytime you catch them doing it). They could be trying to get at something (next door?... or you may not be too chuffed... but rats and mice are the main cause of frantic digging).
If you simply cannot find out what it is, then the only solution is to dig a level around the edge and lay some galvanished mesh and then cover it again. Make sure you use the heavy duty strong stuff.
Its a pain to do but once its done its done and you wont have craters in your garden.
sorry but I cant help further I am afraid.

Josh and Megan dug me a small swimming pool in my garden, she showed him where to do it and supervised!
I think it was a puppy thing because he has grown out of it now.
He still likes to dig on the beach though, big holes!!

we once had a dog that used to dig and in desperation turned over one corner of our garden into a sandbox where we hid his toys and chews etc, he soon learnt that it was far more rewarding to dig up toys and treats in his patch than the roots of my lovley shrubs in ours! He did finally grow out of his diggiing ways but it certainly helped protect the garden until then.

Hopefully she will grow out of it then. I love the idea of giving her her own sandpit :-)

I am devastated, me and OH spent last week putting up fencing and laying wood chips and planting some nice plants, all out of the way of the pups.....in theory.
This morning I jumped in the bath leaving them with the door open to play in the garden, oh silly me
I could hear them yapping and messing about so hurried up to find......that they had jumped over the fence and pulled out and shredded some of my new plants that looked really nice.
I was really angry and just felt like sitting and crying, we had worked so hard, the garden looked lovely, and we didn't think that they would get in, think again!
I sometimes think that they were sent to drive me insane :suspect:
They are only pups and still destructive, I know that but the garden really got to me today, I still can't bring myself to look at the damage and clear it up
Sorry for the whinge I just needed to get it off my chest! :hihi:
