Hi

Running your own business is a daunting thought, I know I’m doing it! If you would be interested in becoming part of a forum that meets up to share your anxieties and questions, bounce ideas off each other, ask how others how they’ve overcome issues and generally chat with people who are in a similar position to you, please PM me.

I have six year experience as an event manager and business management is still very new to me. I know I would appreciate talking to ‘normal, real’ people and discussing my thoughts and worries about every day business occurrences and hurdles.

I am thinking of building up the forum into different events where we have guest speakers - local people who have made a success of their small business and are willing to share tips on how they’ve done it, also a ‘Sell Yourself Day’ where you can actually promote your business by either doing a presentation or having a stall. The forum and events could help you out if you are looking for a certain service to help your business. For instance, you may be looking for a printing company to print some flyers up advertising your business. It may be that someone is at the event who is either a printer just starting up or someone may have used someone and would recommend them – see where I’m coming from? We can all actually help each other and there’s no need for anyone to struggle along on their own.

If you would also be interested in having a mentor to give you advice and to guide you, please get in touch as I also have an idea of setting up a mentoring scheme. I am also looking for people to be mentors so if you have experience and knowledge of setting up a small business, please contact me.

If you wish, you can email me at eighteventmanagement@hotmail.co.uk

I hope to hear from you soon.

I'd be interested in helping out and would consider lending you a meeting room for an afternoon or something...

Good idea - but I think you have actually come up with 2

1. Meet over a beer to discuss and chew the fat - easy to do - count me in

2. Get local guest speakers etc etc - different kettle of fish entirely

This would be a LOT of work. Booking rooms, catering, presumably taking money?? . I'm not bothered about this. There are quangos who get A LOT of money to do this.

The second point of your posting is something I'd like to build my idea into. I have been to many events with guest speakers, and tickets haven't been cheap. Booking rooms and catering is something that I do day in, day out so this wouldn't phase me at all.

And theres the rub... booking rooms and catering, issuing tickets, chasing up speakers etc becomes a business in itself does it not? (assuming the organiser isn't going to do it all for free.)

And meeting in the pub to chew the fat over a pint wouldn't really be of interest to such a person because there would be no revenue in it...

(People have actually invited me "for a chat over a beer" and them started pitching about services - I wasn't very impressed )

If its option 1 then I'm interested
